Position Summary The Assistant Director of Nursing is the second highest level in the nursing department, responsible for assisting in the function of the department and supporting the translation of the facility’s philosophy into nursing practice through planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care delivery.

Responsibilities

Assist in the development, organization, and implementation of nursing care philosophy, objectives, policies, procedures and standards.

Consult with the Director of Nursing to assess the quality of nursing care and identify opportunities for improvement.

Help develop, direct, and evaluate the orientation program for nursing personnel and provide orientation to new nursing employees when the Director of Staff Development is absent.

Make daily rounds to evaluate resident care, monitor nursing practices, and assist personnel with nursing and educational needs.

Maintain knowledge of legal, regulatory and government requirements in nursing practice and apply them through teaching, supervision and evaluation of resident care.

Assist with on-site evaluation of employee performance and provide progressive disciplinary action as needed.

Ensure resident safety and minimize fire and accident risks by complying with facility safety codes and disaster plans.

Schedule staffing to ensure safe and adequate delivery of nursing services while remaining within predetermined staffing ratios.

Serve as an on‑call clinical resource, as scheduled.

Participate in internal audit of nursing practice and implement corrective actions when deficits are identified.

Compile end‑of‑month reports to supervisor.

Establish and facilitate effective employer‑employee relations.

Ensure timely completion of MDS, RAPS, and care plans in compliance with regulatory policies.

Act as liaison among residents, families, visitors and staff to resolve concerns and promote resident satisfaction.

Participate in the facility’s Q.I. program.

Provide compassionate, high‑quality service to residents and families.

Perform other duties as requested.

Educational & Vocational Requirements

Registered Nurse licensed by the New Jersey State Board of Nursing.

Minimum three years full‑time clinical experience; two years in long‑term care nursing and one year in a management/administrative supervisory capacity preferred.

BSN preferred.

Job Skills

Thorough knowledge of nursing theory, techniques, and practices.

Detailed knowledge of modern nursing equipment and devices.

Comprehensive knowledge of medications and expected therapeutic effects.

Independent decision‑making and problem‑solving ability.

Positive interpersonal interaction with personnel, residents, families, visitors, government personnel and public.

Effective supervision of nursing functions.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written technical instructions.

Knowledge of licensing and certification regulations.

Annual verification of a negative TB skin test.

Related Duties

Act in place of Director of Nursing in their absence; engage residents, families, visitors, and employees.

Carry out other requested tasks as needed.
