Overview Beginning level inspectional and law enforcement work in securing compliance with ordinances and established safety standards relating to electrical systems, fixtures and equipment; and related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

A High School Diploma or G.E.D.*

Possession of a valid Louisiana Driver's License.*

AND EITHER: Two (2) years of full-time experience in residential, commercial, or industrial wiring. Experience is subject to verification.

OR: Active certification by the International Code Council as an Electrical Commercial/Residential Inspector.

Note: Some positions may require employees to use their own automobiles. Employees who are required to use their automobiles will be paid a car allowance.

Note: Familiarity with a wide range of electrical equipment and electrical systems such as multi-family residential, high-rise, commercial, and light industrial is required.

Note: If appointed, employee must be certified by the International Code Council (ICC) as an Electrical Commercial/Residential Inspector during the probationary period. No probationary period may last longer than one (1) year. If employees are not certified by the ICC during their probationary period, they must wait one (1) year from the end of their probationary period or receive certification from the ICC to be considered for rehire.

Note: Applicants hired into this job classification between April 1, 2025 and March 31, 2027 are exempted from the requirement to reside in Orleans Parish.

Note: Prior to appointment, the hiring agency is required to verify education and professional licenses/certifications claimed by the applicant to qualify for this classification. If selected for hire, applicants must provide original documents of their qualifying credentials to the hiring agency prior to their start date in this job classification.

A rating of training and experience, weighted 100%. All related previous experience will be considered for qualification purposes; however, credit on the rating of training and experience will only be given for related experience gained within the last ten (10) years.

DOMICILE REQUIREMENTS FOR EMPLOYMENT: Domicile requirements are currently waived for the purpose of application. However, all new full-time employees hired into this classification on or after January 1, 2013 must be domiciled in Orleans Parish within 180 days of hire. Airport and public safety employees are excluded from this provision. Additional exceptions to the domicile requirement may be made on a case-by-case basis. DOMICILE REQUIREMENTS FOR EMPLOYMENT (SEWERAGE AND WATER BOARD): Domicile requirements are currently waived for the purpose of application. Residency requirements are waived for all Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans positions vacant and advertised for at least 90 days. Employees hired under this waiver remain exempt from the city's residency requirement for the duration of their employment at the Sewerage and Water Board. (La R.S. 33:4076). Additional exceptions to the domicile requirement may be made on a case-by-case basis. BACKGROUND CHECK: The hiring department will conduct interviews of qualified individuals prior to requesting a criminal background check, and no job application submitted prior to such interview shall inquire into an applicant’s criminal history.
