Overview

HF Sinclair is seeking a Control Systems Engineer to conduct complex engineering assignments for the Process & Controls Engineering Group and serve as a technical specialist. The role entails formulating and developing moderately complex engineering concepts and providing engineering and technical guidance for process control, instrumentation, measurement technologies, and project scope and estimates. The candidate understands applicable process technology, equipment, and control systems. Responsibilities

Apply engineering principles to create control schemes and execute projects and assignments that include independent evaluation, selection, and substantial modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Estimate project cost and feasibility, supervise contractors and field activities, and provide discipline-specific engineering assistance and guidance to colleagues depending on the assignment. Design, implement, and maintain DCS systems (including switches, routers, stations, controllers, I/O, and servers); plan and implement equipment upgrades to address obsolete equipment. Partner with project engineers to define SCADA-specific hardware for control portions of pipeline and terminal projects. Interpret P&ID drawings and other schematics, providing guidance on instrumentation, automation, and controls of the SCADA system. Review and provide guidance on Cause and Effect matrices, Instrumentation Indexes, and Control Narratives to identify issues in implementation, startup, and continuous operation of SCADA systems. Ensure compliance with safety standards and practices. Provide operations support for the Midstream control and SCADA environments, including troubleshooting and maintaining base and advanced process control strategies and monitoring key process indicators of control system health. Develop and implement advanced process control strategies using existing or future technologies. Additional Responsibilities

Participate in advanced troubleshooting of existing process control code; conduct root-cause investigations to identify problem areas in PLCs and Aveva I/A systems, process control code, operator interfaces or hardware; implement corrective actions with stakeholder input. Assist plants in meeting corporate cybersecurity requirements and maintain malware/virus protection for existing operating systems. Apply manufacturing experience to assist in plant optimization efforts. Lead or participate in Process Hazard Analyses, Management of Change, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews, and Incident Investigations. Demonstrate strong troubleshooting skills to support deployment, startup, testing, commissioning, and abnormal operations of SCADA systems. Review plans and prepare or review technical specifications, contract documents, and estimates. Upgrade, design, configure, maintain, enhance, and monitor related equipment and performance. Review external vendor proposals for purchases or modernization of processing equipment. Qualifications

Experience

A minimum of 10 years of progressive work experience in Process, Automation, and Controls Engineering. Preferred: Instrumentation & Electrical Technician expertise (including PLC); pipeline or petrochemical industry experience; familiarity with PCN components, PCS, ISA Safety Instrumented System requirements; knowledge of advanced process control techniques and programming for asset optimization; experience with Leak Detection. Education

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Bachelor's degree with equivalent field experience as defined in essential duties/responsibilities. Preferred: Chemical Engineering degree. Required Skills

PLC programming and process control design; ability to read P&ID, instrument drawings, and related scope documents; troubleshoot and implement PLC logic for project startup; experience with I/O wiring and termination; familiarity with AutoCAD and MS Office; expertise in I&C design for oil & gas; experience with instrumentation, hazardous location wiring, panel design, and PLC hardware; ability to learn new technologies; strong communication skills; familiarity with VFDs, soft starters, control valves, actuators; knowledge of PLC platforms (GE, Emerson, Rockwell); configuring flow computers (OMNI, ABB Flow-x, Spirit Flow X); familiarity with telemetry and wireless communications. Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

May supervise contractors and provide work direction to the SCADA support team as assigned. Work Conditions
