Overview
The Project Engineer will specialize in the design, installation, and commissioning of mechanical wet systems including HVAC hydronic systems, chilled/hot water distribution, cooling towers, boilers, and related fluid handling equipment. This role combines technical engineering expertise with project management responsibilities to deliver efficient, reliable mechanical systems for commercial, institutional, and industrial facilities.
Responsibilities
Project Management: Manage mechanical wet system projects from design development through system commissioning; develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, and resource plans; coordinate with mechanical contractors, controls vendors, and other trades; lead project meetings and provide regular status updates to stakeholders; ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
Design and Engineering: Design hydronic heating and cooling systems, including piping layouts and equipment selection; perform load calculations and system sizing for chillers, boilers, pumps, and cooling towers; develop piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and system schematics; select and specify mechanical equipment, valves, controls, and accessories; prepare technical specifications and construction documents; conduct energy modeling and system optimization studies.
System Analysis and Calculations: Perform hydraulic calculations for pipe sizing and pump selection; analyze system pressure drops and flow requirements; calculate heat transfer rates and thermal loads; size expansion tanks, air separators, and auxiliary equipment; evaluate water treatment requirements and chemical feed systems.
Construction Support: Review contractor submittals and shop drawings for compliance; conduct site visits to monitor installation progress and quality; resolve field coordination issues and provide technical clarifications; oversee hydrostatic testing, flushing, and balancing procedures; support commissioning activities and system startup.
Quality Control and Compliance: Ensure designs comply with mechanical codes and industry standards; review and approve material selections and installation methods; coordinate with building officials and inspection authorities; maintain project documentation and as-built records; implement safety protocols and quality assurance procedures.
Qualifications
Education and Licensing : Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or ability to obtain within 3 years; LEED AP or other sustainability credentials preferred.
Experience : 3-6 years of experience in mechanical system design and construction; experience with commercial HVAC, central plant, and hydronic systems; background in pump stations, cooling towers, or industrial process cooling preferred; familiarity with energy-efficient system designs and controls integration.
Technical Skills : Proficiency in design software (AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Trane TRACE, Carrier HAP); knowledge of pump curves, system curves, and hydraulic analysis software; understanding of building automation systems and controls sequences; experience with pipe stress analysis and thermal expansion calculations; familiarity with water treatment and chemical feed systems.
Industry Knowledge : Strong understanding of mechanical codes (IMC, ASHRAE standards); knowledge of piping materials, joining methods, and installation practices; understanding of energy codes and sustainable design principles; familiarity with commissioning processes and procedures; knowledge of life safety systems integration; hydronic system design and balancing; pump selection and VFD applications; heat exchanger sizing and selection; cooling tower and evaporative equipment design; boiler and chiller plant design; expansion tank and air elimination system sizing; water quality management and chemical treatment.
Soft Skills : Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; excellent written and verbal communication skills; project coordination and time management capabilities; ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams; attention to detail and quality-focused mindset; adaptability to changing project requirements.
Physical Requirements : Regular site visits to construction projects and existing facilities; ability to navigate construction sites, mechanical rooms, and rooftops; occasional lifting up to 30 pounds; ability to work in various environmental conditions including mechanical spaces.
