Safety Sensitive
positions within the Utilities Department of the Department of Public Works. The position may be assigned to any location within the Bureau of Utilities.
Nature and Scope of Work This is
full journeyman level work
involving the maintenance and repair of automotive, trucks, and related gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.
Work Responsibilities
Perform skilled tasks in mechanical and electrical repair of automotive equipment, including police vehicles, passenger cars, trucks, tractors, mowers, and other specialized equipment.
Receive assignments via work orders and work under general supervision, using independent judgment for diagnosis and repair.
Inspect work during and after completion to ensure quality.
Conduct engine tuning, including spark plug replacement, timing adjustments, and cylinder head repairs.
Repair and overhaul transmissions, differentials, and axle assemblies; service brake systems.
Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment to determine service requirements.
Inspect, adjust, and replace various units and parts such as brakes, cooling, ignition, electrical, and fuel systems, mufflers, and exhaust pipes.
Overhaul generators, carburetors, clutch assemblies, and replace broken axles and springs.
Repair and overhaul air compressors, pumps, chainsaws, mowers, and other specialized equipment; perform limited welding and blacksmithing work as needed.
Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Extensive knowledge of automotive repair methods, tools, diagnostic instruments, and techniques.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Skill in operating diagnostic equipment and repair tools.
Ability to diagnose defects and adapt tools and parts to repair problems.
Ability to interpret service manuals, specifications, and diagrams.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Minimum education: Graduation from high or vocational school.
At least two years of experience in automotive repair at the full performance level.
ASE certification relevant to the area of assignment (must be obtained within six months of employment if not already held).
Valid commercial Class B driver’s license without air brake restrictions (must obtain within six months if not possessed).
Ability to acquire a medical certificate as required by Federal Law for CDL licensing.

Preference will be given to candidates with:
A valid Class "A" CDL without air brake restriction.
Experience with heavy-duty trucks and off-road equipment with complex hydraulic systems.
