Job Overview This individual will design, program, simulate, develop, test, and manage automated systems for manufacturing equipment and processes. The role collaborates with cross‑functional teams to install, document, and troubleshoot automation equipment, improving plant productivity and supporting engineering initiatives. Typical projects range from $100k to $1M.
A Day In The Life – Automation Development
Lead automation projects to increase capacity and quality.
Identify improvement opportunities and develop supportive programs.
Collaborate with Product Designers, Project Managers, and Manufacturing personnel to refine designs.
Generate detailed Statements of Work for internal and vendor bidding.
Develop capital justification and prepare Appropriation Requests (ARs).
Design and program control systems using AutoCAD/AutoCAD Electrical and RSLogix/Studio 5000, integrating Rockwell CompactLogix PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors, pneumatics, servo controls, vision systems, and Fanuc robots.
Justify “make or buy” decisions and manage vendor‑built projects through specification, installation, and commissioning.
Provide operator/maintenance training and support for new equipment.
Maintain documentation, procedures, and databases to ensure integrity of control technologies.
Build prototypes to validate complex processes before final design.
Complete assigned work on schedule and within budget while maintaining quality.
Manufacturing Operations Support
Develop and implement long‑range plans for process control improvements.
Guide and train employees on process control methodology.
Modify procedures and calibration guidelines for automation processes.
Project Management
Lead project teams and communicate objectives clearly; track progress and report.
Provide system capability input and assist with design decisions.
Education And/Or Experience
B.S. in Automation, Controls, Electrical or related engineering discipline; mechanical engineers with controls experience considered. BSEE preferred.
8+ years in manufacturing or system integration with proven automation design and implementation.
Plant maintenance and operational knowledge.
Deep understanding of machine control engineering concepts (vision, safety, motion control) and mechanical equipment.
Leadership and communication skills to manage cross‑functional teams.
Technical Skills
Extensive experience designing, optimizing, and building automation equipment.
Interface with mechanical teams to configure motion controllers, safety setups, and data management.
5+ years specifying, designing, and programming Rockwell Automation products.
3+ years designing schematics with AutoCAD/AutoCAD Electrical.
Optional expertise: Fanuc robot programming, vision system programming, hydraulic servo control, LaBVIEW, data acquisition, and modeling tools.
