Assistant Power Plant Manager
Inside Higher Ed invites applicants to join the University of Massachusetts Amherst as the Assistant Power Plant Manager. This staff, full‑time position supports the Central Heating Plant operations across campus.
Job Summary The Assistant Power Plant Manager provides leadership over plant operations and maintenance for the Central Heating Plant. This role manages daily plant operations, ensures compliance with permits and regulations, and plans preventive, predictive, corrective, and overhaul maintenance of all plant equipment.
Essential Functions
Act as acting Central Heating Plant Manager when the Manager is absent.
Direct Plant Lead Operators and Power Plant Operators to meet electric and steam generation requirements, maintain plant efficiency and reliability, and satisfy safety and environmental standards.
Develop and implement work schedules for 24‑hour plant coverage with properly licensed personnel.
Recruit, interview, hire, and train new operating personnel.
Establish and maintain Central Heating Plant operating procedures.
Continuously review and improve operational processes, ensuring personnel adhere to procedures.
Write and maintain plant operation reports concerning equipment efficiency, energy consumption rates, and operational logs.
Investigate and resolve operating abnormalities and incidents to improve equipment availability and performance.
Schedule repair and maintenance of gas turbines, boilers, generators, and all support equipment in compliance with applicable laws and inspection requirements.
Requisition and verify fuel oil, chemicals, equipment, consumables, and ammonia inventory.
Coordinate gas usage nomination with Berkshire Gas Company and the University’s suppliers.
Coordinate electrical production, campus grid consumption, Demand Response Participation, and Forward Capacity Market Program requirements with ISO New England.
General
Make recommendations to the Central Heating Manager regarding operations, maintenance, and capital budgets.
Provide support for environmental, health, and safety reporting of the Central Heating Plant.
Develop and recommend budgets and schedules for employee training.
Maintain harmonious relationships with union representatives.
Support affirmative action and non‑discrimination goals.
Perform other related technical duties and administrative tasks assigned by the Central Heating Plant Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or Business Administration with 4–5 years of supervisory or managerial experience in a Power Plant; or Associate degree with 5–7 years of experience.
Possession of a First Class Stationary Engineer’s license issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety.
Thorough understanding of generating plant operations and maintenance, with strong knowledge of equipment, gas turbine, steam turbine, HRSG, boilers, and boiler water treatment processes.
Knowledge of plant engineering and plant maintenance functions and how they relate to operations.
Experience coordinating electric generation and fuel supply with vendors and Local Distribution Companies.
Experience with budgeting and reporting practices.
Demonstrated skill in planning, coordinating, and directing varied programs and tasks directly affecting the overall plant operation.
Strong oral and written communication and computational skills; ability to work with a personal computer and word processing, spreadsheet, and drawing software.
Physical Demands Ability to work under unusual and special conditions that can arise in a power plant.
Additional Details
Ability to obtain a Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Operators of Wastewater Treatment Facilities Certified Operator, Grade 2‑1 License within the probationary period.
Receives assignments from the Central Heating Plant Manager; the incumbent works independently and consults with the supervisor when clarifications are needed.
May functionally supervise drafting personnel and other engineers in performing duties for specific project(s).
Work Schedule
Monday‑Friday; 7 am‑3 pm.
Ability to work extra/irregular hours, including shift coverage as business needs dictate.
Salary Information Level 30; PSU Hiring Ranges.
