Description Senior Scientist/Principal Scientist - Clinical Veterinarian Kalamazoo, Michigan, is the world headquarters for Veterinary Medicine Research and Development (VMRD) at Zoetis. The Veterinary Service group within Animal Research Support (ARS) at Zoetis is responsible for developing and implementing veterinary care programs and providing veterinary support to VMRD projects at the Richland and Kalamazoo sites. We seek an experienced, innovative, and highly motivated veterinarian to contribute to an exceptional animal care program and collaborate with VMRD researchers to produce high-quality research studies. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Candidate must have a DVM/VMD from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine and at least 3 years of clinical veterinary practice experience, primarily in companion animal medicine and surgery, with familiarity with livestock (horses, cattle, swine, small ruminants, poultry) and traditional lab animal species (rats, mice, guinea pigs). Licensed to practice in at least one state, with the expectation to obtain licensure in Michigan. Federally accredited or eligible for federal accreditation. Hands-on expertise in companion animal techniques such as handling, restraint, dosing, venipuncture, clinical examination, diagnosis, dental surgery, minor surgical procedures, and necropsy. OTHER DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES Experience in a research setting as a clinical veterinarian. Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Medicine (DACLAM). Experience developing animal models for research. Experience working in biocontainment facilities and developing biosecurity protocols. Additional academic training in infectious diseases, immunology, or epidemiology. Knowledge of animal welfare compliance and oversight. Experience with USDA APHIS-regulated animal programs and AAALAC accreditation. Established network of research veterinarians and veterinary experts. Motivated, proactive, independent, flexible, with strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail. Excellent documentation, writing, teaching, and oral communication skills. Experience with electronic data capture and management software. Experience with livestock and traditional lab animal species. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary role is to provide clinical veterinary support to research animals at the Richland and/or Kalamazoo sites, supporting VMRD. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Developing and implementing population and preventive medicine programs. Training animal care technicians and study personnel. Reviewing protocols and ensuring compliance. Participating in pre-study activities. Preparing health certificates. Assessing animals before shipment and upon receipt. Authoring and reviewing SOPs. Performing necropsies. Serving as an ad hoc member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Participating in veterinary on-call duties on weekends and holidays rotationally. Contributing to facility design and renovation planning. Additional duties may include supporting animal welfare audits of suppliers and research organizations, and participating in internal and external animal welfare audits (AAALACi, USDA, etc.). Work Environment:
The role involves collaboration with research scientists, study monitors, managers, and technicians. May require working with zoonotic pathogens and chemicals, including handling zoonotic organisms and working in BSL-2 facilities with shower-in/out procedures. Support is approximately 25% research project-related and 75% animal care program support. On-call veterinary duties are rotational, including some outside regular hours. Travel (up to 10%) to off-site locations may be required. Support for continuing education and career development is available. Full-time, regular position.
