Clinical Veterinarian . The mission of the Center for Comparative Medicine is to support biomedical research and teaching that utilizes laboratory animals. The Center does this in a manner which promotes the policies set by the Institutional Care and Use Committee (IACUC) whose charge is to oversee compliance by personnel at the University of Virginia with federal regulations and guidelines.
The Successful Candidate Will Be Expected To Provide Oversight Of The Clinical Veterinary Care Program For Research Animals At The University. The Successful Incumbent Will
Deliver expert clinical case management, treatment, and knowledge of a variety of laboratory animal species including transgenic mice, rats, rabbits, pigs, sheep, ferrets, prairie voles, zebra finches, white-crowned sparrows, zebra fish, Xenopus tropicalis, and Xenopus laevis. Provide surgical support including anesthesia monitoring, induction, and recovery. Perform or assist in minor and major surgical procedures. Evaluate and examine newly arrived USDA animals upon request. Understands, follows, and carries out all SOPs, quality assurance standards, safety procedures, and documentation requirements for related activities. Oversee rodent importation quarantine, review of health reports for incoming shipments, and the performance of rederivation procedures. Participate in On-call rotation and provide services after regular business hours, weekends, and holidays. IACUC/OAW Support: Provide expertise in supporting IACUC and Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) functions, including veterinary protocol review, conducting training for personnel, and addressing compliance concerns to ensure adherence to federal regulations and institutional policies.
Training Responsibilities
Develop veterinary technician training for new employees and continuing education. Provide hands on training for the Comparative Medicine staff and researcher staff. Supervise veterinary technicians to ensure work meets expectations and provide annual evaluations. Develop tools to assist staff and investigators in compliance-related activities. Consult with research staff on the veterinary aspects of protocol development. Teach research personnel in a Rodent Anesthesia and Surgery class every other month. Ensure staff has resources needed to accomplish their tasks well and in a timely manner. Participate in new employee recruitment, interviews and hiring decisions; onboard and train new hires. Coordinate staff to ensure research support can be provided when it does not interfere with routine health assessments.
Compliance Responsibilities
Ensure regulatory compliance by reporting instances of non-compliance to the Office of Animal Welfare. Review, implement, improve & assist in audits of records, procedures & protocols. Participate in monthly IACUC meetings as a voting member and semiannual inspections/program review.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree (DVM or VMD). Licensure: Active veterinary license in one of the United States and be either certified or board eligible with the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. Health and Drug Screening: Position requires a cleared health and drug screening pre-hire.
Anticipated Hiring Range : $125,000-$160,000 commensurate with education and experience. Relocation reimbursement up to $20,000 will be provided.

This position is located on the main grounds of the University of Virginia, but can include semiannual trips to the Anheuser Busch Coastal Research Center in Oyster, VA, The Virginia State Arboretum in Front Royal, VA and/or Mountain Lake Biological Station in Blacksburg, VA.
Background checks, pre-employment health screenings, and drug screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment.
Physical Demands
The candidate must be able to lift 30lbs, stand at and walk between facilities for up to six hours per day, and wear appropriate personal protective equipment to work in environments that may contain hazards which include: animal allergens, biohazards (ABSL2-3), hot machinery, radioisotopes, and chemical hazards.
