The Lehigh Valley Zoo is seeking a

Head Veterinarian

to lead the Zoo's medical care for our exhibit and ambassador collections of over 300 animals from more than 100 species. The zoo works closely with SSP and SAFE species programs and is growing annually. Located within the 1,200-acre Trexler Nature Preserve, the zoo offers a blend of city and country living. Summary The Head Veterinarian manages the animal health program, overseeing daily medical care for all species and supervising veterinary staff, interns, and working with the Animal Care department to ensure the health and well-being of the collection, in compliance with all policies, procedures, and legal requirements. Main Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Duties Provide diagnostic, medical, and surgical care following all protocols, regulations, and policies. Implement an animal health program including preventative medicine, surgery, anesthesia, radiology, and pathology, meeting AZA, AAZV, AVMA, and USDA standards. Conduct laboratory tests such as hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, cytology, and fecal analysis. Manage medication dispensing and inventory. Maintain hospital facilities and equipment. Work with animal care staff on behavioral training for medical procedures. Oversee and train veterinary staff, interns, students, and volunteers, collaborating with educational institutions. Participate in emergency response drills, animal capture teams, and shipment management, including health certificates. Provide veterinary services for outside organizations' collections as needed. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervise, evaluate, and coordinate the work of veterinary staff and support personnel. Handle hiring, performance reviews, discipline, and conflict resolution. Coordinate with consulting veterinarians when necessary. Administrative Duties Maintain accurate medical records. Support zoo-wide programs, including education, media, and conservation efforts. Collaborate on chemical and pesticide use policies. Communicate with regulatory agencies such as USDA, DEA, and AZA. Manage veterinary budgets and recommend equipment purchases. Participate in committees related to Safety, DEAI, and Conservation to support the zoo's mission. Perform other duties as assigned. Experience Required
