General Summary
Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.
Essential Functions
Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
Evaluates specimens for acceptability for proper testing; investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens; organizes workload for maximum efficiency; ensures correct patient encounter is used for each test.
Verifies accuracy of results before reporting; performs testing on all proficiency testing specimens in accordance with policy.
Reports test results in a timely manner, including statistics, aberrancies, critical values, and other special requests as defined by policy; ensures turnaround times meet Chest Pain and Stroke Accreditation standards.
Follows established quality control procedures and reports discrepancies to supervisor; performs QC analysis and records results as required.
Performs daily, weekly, monthly maintenance on instruments and equipment; calibrates equipment; maintains supplies and documents temperatures as required.
Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens; follows chain of command if unresolved.
Complies with universal precautions and safety procedures; wears appropriate protective equipment; reports hazards; disposes of hazardous waste properly; maintains hand hygiene; stores personal devices as required.
Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, fingersticks, heelsticks) as needed; performs hand hygiene; identifies patients according to policy; uses wristband scanning and specimen labeling per procedure.
Attends safety trainings; completes required education and competencies; maintains department standards and professional conduct; adheres to department scripting and customer service expectations.
Demonstrates respect and maintains confidentiality; communicates professionally; participates in team goals and quality assurance projects; supports lean process improvements and the Fisher-Titus Way philosophy.
Maintains work area; ensures supplies are available; supports orientation of students and new staff as needed.
