The Anatomic Pathology Laboratory Technician performs routine clerical and complex technical procedures and support functions for the Surgical Pathology, Histology, and/or Cytology laboratories, as well as for Clinical Pathology when required by a department. The Anatomic Pathology Laboratory Technician II performs routine clerical and complex technical procedures and support functions for the Surgical Pathology, Histology, and/or Cytology laboratories, as well as for Clinical Pathology when required by a department. Job Duties
AP LA 1:
Receives, sorts, accessions and prepares specimens for analysis and testing including tissue and needle aspirates. Assesses specimens for proper collection and fixation and takes corrective action as necessary. Follows established best practices to ensure that patient’s orders, & specimens are always identified & labelled correctly. Prepare specimens and/or slides for transport & storage, deliver appropriate specimens and/or slides to designated laboratory section for testing. Performs various staining and cover-slipping of prepared slides. Performs and documents routine maintenance on specified equipment and troubleshoots as needed. Maintains inventory, replenishes stock & supplies. Navigates and accesses multiple computer applications as needed. Manages phone inquiries and provides information regarding specimen collection, transport, and patient results as appropriate. Files surgical slides and paraffin blocks in a timely manner. Retrieves surgical slides and blocks as required from the permanent storage records. Follows established protocols to replenish, clean and maintain tissue processors, stainers and other lab equipment. (location dependent). Performs body fluid procedures using the Cytospin centrifuge (location dependent) Provides gross descriptions of non-gynecological specimens (location dependent) Prepares frozen sections / assists the Pathologist (location dependent) Assists in the collection of fine needle aspiration specimens (location dependent) Successfully completes initial and periodic competency assessments for all assigned job functions. Assists in the training and orientation of new employees. Completes departmental continuing education requirements. AP LA 2:

AP LA 2:
Minimum of two-year related work experience AND documented completion of educational courses in LQMS, LEAN or 5S, or a professional development program or course, AND leads at least one approved quality project per year OR
Possesses pre-requisites for MLT or MLS (categorical or generalist), Histotechnologist (HTL)and currently enrolled in program for MLT, MLS or HTL with a pending completion date no greater than one year OR graduate level education or higher in a health services field with pending completion date no greater than 1 year.
