Lab Medical Technologist - Stat Lab - Part Time Evenings Overview Performs moderate to high complexity testing.

What You Will Do

Evaluates specimens and test orders for acceptability and determines rejections according to established guidelines.

Maintains and assures positive identity of all patient specimens, specimen types and aliquots throughout the analytical process. Stores specimens properly.

Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses and reporting. Enters/verifies all results completely and accurately.

Performs and records tests in one or more sections of the Laboratory under the indirect supervision of a section supervisor according to Lab policy.

Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of difficult principles, procedures and techniques and the ability to make independent judgments on the basis of scientific knowledge. Supervises personnel of less skill and experience.

Meets productivity standards/turnaround time of the department. Maintains efficient workflow.

Recognizes testing errors/discrepancies or problems affecting test results. Either corrects the problem or notifies appropriate supervisor on a timely basis.

Operates all instruments according to accepted written protocols.

Recognizes and identifies instrument problems, performs troubleshooting and seeks help of proper resources if needed.

Performs and documents all Quality Control, routine and non-routine maintenance according to established Laboratory protocol.

Follows laboratory established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s acceptable level of performance. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from performance specifications.

Performs proficiency testing. Ensures that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.

Calls and documents abnormal, critical or STAT results according to established protocol.

Correlates test results with diagnosis and/or compares with previous results if available. Recognizes and resolves problems or inconsistencies.

Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the hospital information system (HIS) and laboratory information systems (LIS) and their application to job-related functions.

Maintains a clean, neat and orderly workplace. Cleans refrigerators, incubators, centrifuges, computer terminal screens and general laboratory equipment.

Processes receipt of departmental supplies. Labels, records and stores supplies received. Reviews quantities and expiration dates of all supplies. Maintains inventory as needed for department.

Participates in orientation, instruction and training of others as required by department.

Instructs nursing personnel or other health care workers in patient preparation for tests and in obtaining and handling specimens.

Assists physicians, hospital personnel, patients and the general public with pertinent laboratory information. Directs questions or problems to appropriate personnel.

Prepares specimens for dispatch to reference laboratories.

May assume responsibilities of section supervisors in their absence.

Understands and practices standard precautions and infection control to protect both self and patient. Practices hospital and laboratory safety according to policies and procedures. Reports incidents as necessary.

Job performance requires extensive standing, walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling and crouching.

Cooperates with lab staff to achieve lab goals and maintains good employee relations, interdepartmental relations and public relations.

Keeps current in the field of Medical Technology through literature, attendance at workshops, seminars and in-service programs. Maintains membership in professional organizations.

Performs other related duties as requested.

Education Qualifications

Associate's Degree Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry or related life Sciences. Required

Bachelor's Degree Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry or related life Sciences. Required

Experience Qualifications

Experience preferred. Recent graduates are welcome and encouraged to apply.

Licenses and Certifications

ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologists certification or eligible. Required Upon Hire

Final base compensation is determined based on employment status (Full/Part-Time or Per Diem), skills, education, and experience. Pay range: $34.50/hour - $47.00/hour.
