Main Function
Under general supervision, independently performs a wide range of routine to complex medical laboratory tests, procedures and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.
Tests, procedures and analysis encompass the following areas:
histology, hematology, blood bank, serology, immunology, bacteriology, chemistry and coagulation.
Assists with projects.
Required Job Specific Competencies
Demonstrate the knowledge and skills for the operation of instrumentation and processing of specimens by both automated and manual methods.
Demonstrates the ability to troubleshoot instrumentation and quality control issues.
Demonstrates the ability to work independently and exhibits flexibility in decision making and prioritizing assignments.
Demonstrates the ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with all lab teams and medical staff.
Actively guards the confidentiality of sensitive information including but not limited to the patients, staff and the health system.
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-analytical specimen procedures - 5%
Obtains specimens from patients, following established lab processes
Receives specimens into LIS and/or places test orders into LIS
Analytical processes/Quality and Quantity of work - 85%
Performs required maintenance on analyzers
Operates analyzers: monitoring for proper operation; interprets flags/alarms
Troubleshoots/solves basic instrument/methodology problems
Utilizes QC materials and interprets results
Evaluates reagent quality
Evaluates patient results, correlating with patient information
Processes specimen tests in acceptable time: STAT/ASAPs testing prioritized within workload
Remains competent in all testing processes
Post-analytical Processes - 10%
Follows established reporting processes, using LIS to verify, report and document tests results and comments
Participates in inventory control
Qualifications
NYS Medical Technologist license required
B.S. in Medical Technology, or B.S. in chemical, biological or physical science with at least one year of pertinent lab experience, OR 90 semester hours in an accredited college meeting NYS MT specific criteria with at least one year of experience or training covering several fields of medical lab work required.
Preferred MT ASCP certification
Experience as a Med Tech preferred but not required.
