Overview
The Saint Louis Zoo is seeking applicants for the position of Staff Veterinarian. The position is one of four clinical veterinarians reporting directly to the Director of Animal Health, and is part of a growing team that also includes a veterinary pathologist (Dipl. ACVP), an ACZM-compliant clinical veterinary resident, a veterinary technician zoological manager, six registered veterinary technicians, a quarantine specialist and an administrative assistant. Responsibilities
Assist in the care and preventive medicine programs for the Zoo’s taxonomically diverse collection, with animals on three campuses. Contribute to the training of residents in an ACZM-compliant residency program in Zoological Medicine. Support expansion opportunities as new campuses (Safari Park) are developed, including herd medical management and traditional zoo animal medicine. Engage in direct conservation work and diverse medical and husbandry management at the red wolf breeding center. Perform duties in clinical medicine, preventive medicine, quarantine and pre-shipment testing. Mentor residents and students; develop internal and external collaborative initiatives in zoological medicine and conservation. Contribute to peer-reviewed literature and professional advancement aligned with the Saint Louis Zoo’s programs.
Qualifications
Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent); able to practice veterinary medicine in the United States. Able to obtain Missouri veterinary license and USDA accreditation within 6 months of employment. Eligible to obtain a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) practitioner license; registered with the Missouri BNDD. Board-eligibility or Diplomate status in the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) is desirable. Excellence in clinical decision making, knowledge and experience in zoological medicine; strong communication skills. Ability to work independently and in teams; capable of practicing medicine and surgery on all zoo animal species under Saint Louis Zoo care, including anesthesia, diagnostics and preventive medicine. Service-oriented, positive attitude, collaborative mindset, and alignment with the Zoo’s values and mission.
Additional Requirements
All successful candidates must undergo a criminal background check and a drug test. A negative drug test is mandatory, with testing for five substances including marijuana. Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
