3rd Job Summary: The Charge Nurse is a Registered Nurse with unit lead responsibilities for patient flow and staffing adjustments to meet patient needs. Responsibilities include evaluating patient acuity, assessing staff workload, and managing admissions, discharges, and transfers. The role involves facilitating patient flow, triaging admissions, overseeing care coordination, and ensuring safe staffing levels. The Charge Nurse acts as a clinical leader, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, and may assume patient assignments based on unit needs. They also monitor regulatory compliance, quality, and patient experience, and serve as a resource on the unit. When functioning as a Staff RN, they assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care, primarily for adult patients, following ANA standards. Experience: Requires clinical competence in the target patient population, with 2-3 years of related experience, or approval by the Unit Manager. Critical Care positions require 2 years of Critical Care experience unless approved. Education: Bachelor’s degree in nursing is required. Froedtert Health may consider current non-BSN RNs with at least 5 years of acute care experience and leadership skills, committed to obtaining a BSN within 5 years. If already functioning as a Charge RN since June 1, 2016, with 2-3 years in the role, the BSN requirement may be waived. Skills: Demonstrated leadership roles such as Shared Governance chair, Committee chair, Preceptor, or Super User/Champion. Licensure: Current Wisconsin RN license or multi-state license via NLC. BLS certification within 90 days of hire; ACLS preferred.
