Senior Engineer - Mechatronics - GE Aerospace Research Located in Niskayuna, New York, this role is part of GE Aerospace Research, building on 125+ years of industrial research heritage. Roles and Responsibilities

Lead and execute projects focused on mechanism design coupled with electromechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuation for advanced and automated inspection, repair, manufacturing, or aerospace systems.

Lead multidisciplinary teams of GE Aerospace Research colleagues, GE Aerospace Services team members, and external partners to invent, shape, and mature new technology.

Shape and execute the design, selection, analysis, system integration, testing, and maturation of robotic manipulators, sensors, actuators, controllers, and electromechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.

Provide technical guidance through effective coaching/mentoring.

Foster a culture rooted in GE Aerospace behaviors: respect for people, continuous improvement, and customer driven.

Own development and maintenance of technology roadmaps and demonstrate accountability for a pipeline of funded projects.

Work with other support functions and/or external suppliers to meet project deliverables.

Prepare and participate in project and technical reviews.

Develop and mature design or analysis tools for advanced electromechanical and other robotic/mechatronic systems.

Provide expertise to help resolve technical challenges across the organization.

Lead development and writing of internal and external proposals.

Leverage and grow an external network of collaborators in academia, government, and industry.

Patent inventions and develop a record of publication via conferences and peer reviewed journals.

Required Qualifications

PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or Applied Mechanics with a minimum of 7 years industrial experience, OR MS degree with a minimum of 10 years industrial experience.

Experience in developing electro‑mechanical systems, including actuators, sensors, and communication modules for automation.

Proficiency in using 3D solid modeling software (e.g., NX, SOLIDWORKS, Creo) and prototyping.

Experience building data acquisition and/or control systems using off‑the‑shelf options such as NI with LabVIEW, PLC, DSP, and microcontrollers.

Experience in simulation of kinematics and dynamics of mechanisms and electromechanical systems, as well as lumped parameter system modeling for electromechanical, thermal, and pneumatic/hydraulic systems.

Experience leading multidisciplinary teams to mature complex engineering systems from concept through validation.

Results‑oriented execution mindset with a sense of urgency.

Ability to work under pressure and meet aggressive deadlines.

Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team and to interface with senior leaders and customers with clarity and confidence.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in a global team environment.

Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required; we will not sponsor visas.

Desired Characteristics

10+ years of experience in an industrial or laboratory setting.

Extensive experience developing end effectors and utilizing off‑the‑shelf robotic manipulators to reliably automate complex manufacturing or inspection tasks.

Extensive testing experience of electromechanical components and systems, data acquisition (DAQ, LabVIEW), and design validation.

Experience with electrical system design, including printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Analytical experience, including structural/thermal finite element analysis with ANSYS.

Experience implementing and utilizing Lean in a research environment, including daily/weekly management and structured problem solving.

Experience developing technical ideas with external customers and a track record of converting ideas to programs.

Compensation and Benefits Base pay range: $100,000 – $205,000 annually. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of the base salary. The posting is expected to close on October 31st, 2025.
