Overview Transmission Designer - Transmission & Distribution (Bismarck, Sioux Falls) at Burns & McDonnell. The Staff Transmission Designer will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer to assist project teams to create world class designs for new projects, alterations and redevelopments on a variety of projects including underground and overhead high voltage transmission lines. The Staff Transmission Designer will work with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting transmission line plans according to budget constraints, design factors or client needs.

Responsibilities

Assist in the transmission line design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.

Assist with modifying and reviewing production drawings for projects involving high voltage (69-500kV) transmission lines.

Assist in designing transmission line components for project needs and requirements defined by project managers, including plan and profile drawings, structure load diagrams and foundation drawings.

Apply basic knowledge of commonly used civil and structural engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the civil/structural engineering services industry.

Assist with researching and compiling project-related data as required by project managers; assist with compiling studies and reports.

Assist with correcting and updating drawings provided by senior engineers to verify corrections are made within multiple CAD-related software.

Assist with client presentations, shop drawing review, and contract administration for the design of high voltage transmission lines.

Assist in performing field inspections, measurements or calculations for public and private clients.

All other duties as assigned.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the country where this position is located (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship).

Performs other duties as assigned and complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

Bachelor Degree in drafting technology or related field and 7 years related experience OR

Associate Degree and 8 years related experience OR

9 years progressive detailing and design experience. Required

Advanced understanding of design software such as PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Excel to develop the design deliverables; ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs.

Advanced ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings.

Advanced knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.

Advanced knowledge of the theory and practices of the assigned discipline; capable of operating related discipline design software to execute production tasks.

Ability to work collaboratively with Project Managers, Engineers and Designers in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues and achieve objectives.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
