Overview
Base pay range: $22.30/hr - $30.14/hr The purpose of this position is to provide adult and pediatric phlebotomy service to the outpatients and inpatients served by the OHSU Hospital and Clinics and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. This person works closely with the Phlebotomy team and others in the department, to ensure immediate, courteous, and comprehensive responses to requests for service, or concerns about specimens and related matters. This person maintains a professional and customer service oriented focus at all times. The employee promotes OHSU\'s mission by delivering high quality, cost effective, family-oriented service. All tasks are performed with support and oversight by the Phlebotomy Management Team. This position helps to create a collaborative environment by integrating education, research, and clinical leadership. Responsibilities
Inpatient Specimen Collection and Processing: Collect scheduled, routine, collect now, and timed draw specimens from inpatients using approved methods. Follow policies in the Phlebotomy Procedure Manual. Perform venipuncture on adult and pediatric inpatients. Assist coworkers as needed. Correctly identify patients using two identifiers, scan inpatient ID band, and label tubes at the bedside. Greet patients professionally. Collect on-demand and timed specimens as directed. Collect scheduled draws at due time or earlier. Review Rover for taken draws and triage urgent draws. Document collections, cancellations, notes, and moved draws. Correctly execute downtime procedure for equipment and Epic failure. Ensure timely transportation to the lab. Outpatient Specimen Collection and Processing: Collect specimens from outpatients using approved methods. Follow Phlebotomy Procedure Manual. Assist coworkers as needed. Greet patients professionally. Correctly identify patients using two identifiers. Perform venipuncture on adult and pediatric patients. Label tubes with patient present. Ensure timely transportation to lab. Clerical and Customer Service Functions: Answer multi-line telephone, clarify orders, notify clinics/providers of specimen problems. Communicate clearly with staff and patients. Meet customer needs. Interact with all professional staff courteously. Demonstrate high level customer service with timely responsiveness, problem-solving, and thorough handling of specimens and paperwork. Laboratory Testing: Perform coagulation testing at CHH Laboratory with accuracy, speed, and efficiency under supervision. Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent and completion of phlebotomy training with clinical rotation or 3 months recent phlebotomy experience. Certification ASCP PBT, NHA CPT, RPT AMT or equivalent required, or must be completed in first year of employment. OR One year of college-level coursework in psychology, communications, or science plus 1 year phlebotomy experience. Certification as above required or to be completed in first year. Strong customer service skills and ability to interact with doctors, nurses, laboratory staff, and patients while maintaining customer service focus. Ability to initiate procedures to improve workflow and accuracy in Phlebotomy. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions; effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment; capable of independent work and teamwork. Preferred Qualifications
Phlebotomy skills and knowledge; experience with Laboratory Information System and Hospital Information System; inpatient/outpatient pediatric and/or adult phlebotomy. Additional Details
This position serves the OHSU Lab Services Outpatient Clinics. May require flexible schedules, nights, weekends, holidays; travel between sites; exposure to blood, body fluids, chemical hazards; working in noisy/crowded environments; wearing PPE for long periods; temperature fluctuations.
