Overview Sr. Electrical Engineer at SPX Technologies within Detection and Measurement. The role involves designing state-of-the-art products for the utility inspection market, utilizing embedded vision systems to create cutting edge complex designs. The Senior Electrical Engineer will design, debug, and test prototype components and circuit card assemblies while working in a cross-functional organization. Product designs involve the combination of motor control, analog, digital, and high-speed design. Senior Engineers may also provide work direction to other engineers, lead project teams, lead engineering-wide process improvements, write standards as a subject matter expert and be a product owner.

The Senior Electrical Engineer role involves occasional travel and requires the ability to work within commercial and scientific teams. The Senior Electrical Engineer must be capable of high-level, project-oriented system design and analysis. The role requires the ability to take ownership of and be responsible for many simultaneous system deliverables, including project planning, design, implementation, testing, documentation, validation and support. He/she must be a graduate in an applicable field with significant industry experience or equivalent.

Responsibilities include designing state-of-the-art products for the utility inspection market, utilizing embedded vision system to create cutting edge complex designs; design, debug, and test prototype components and circuit card assemblies in a cross-functional organization. Product designs involve the combination of motor control, analog, digital and high-speed design. Senior Engineers may also provide work direction to other engineers, lead project teams, and be a product owner. The role involves project planning, design, implementation, testing, documentation, validation and support, and occasional travel.

Design and Layout: Circuitry with brushed and brushless (BLDC) motor controls; complex electronic circuits, subsystems, systems, and products; layout of analog, digital, microprocessor, high voltage/power, and motor control circuitry at schematic capture and PCB layout stages.

Testing and Evaluation: Write test plans and perform evaluation testing; interfaces with mechanical components as needed.

Technical Support and Analysis: Provide technical support for existing products, including quality assessment, failure analysis, and product improvement.

Project Management and Leadership: Provide technical guidance, serve as a point of contact, prepare briefings for senior management, and assist in problem resolution; review subcontractor plans and budgets; lead project teams and process improvements; act as product owner and write standards as SME.

Documentation and Reporting: Write manufacturing and test procedures and reports; provide technical support to sales and marketing for bids and proposals.

Qualifications Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Minimum ten years in Electrical Engineering

Experience with motion control and BLDC motor control design

Extensive experience with schematic capture and PCB layout (preferably Altium)

Experience with circuit simulation tools (Pspice, LTSpice)

Familiar with microprocessor/microcontroller development tools

Experience in design, repair and analysis of electronic systems

Familiarity with established engineering design principles and practices

Familiarity with standard Office Tools (Word, Excel, Acrobat)

Experience taking a design from concept to mass production

Technical competency commensurate with BSEE degree or equivalent

Ability to analyze data and solve complex problems

Ability to understand detailed component and product specifications

Ability to utilize standard laboratory test equipment

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Familiarity with Data Analysis Tools (Matlab, Mathcad)

Knowledgeable of grounding, noise mitigation, EMI reduction techniques

Experience with designing for CE, FCC, TUV, UKCA and other certifying bodies

Experience with designing for manufacturability and serviceability

Design and layout of multilayer PCBs up to 8 layers using Altium Designer or equivalent

Hand soldering and rework to troubleshoot and prototype designs

Power supply design to support analog & digital circuitry; experience with low-noise, moderate bandwidth PCB layout

Experience with Camera vision systems

Familiarity with optical sources (lamps, lasers, LEDs) and their drive circuits

Education & Certifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent

Travel & Working Environment

Monday – Friday, Hybrid schedule with at least 3 days per week in office

Most work is performed in an office environment; occasional trips to utility or contractor facilities for research and testing may be required

Occasional overnight travel as necessary
