Overview System Operator - Facilities position at UC San Diego Health. Location: Jacobs Medical Center, La Jolla. Appointment Type: Career; 100% effort; Work schedule: Variable, 8 hrs/day, Tuesday-Saturday. Total openings: 2. Extended Deadline: Fri 9/19/2025.

Responsibilities Under supervision, perform skilled journey-level duties in the operation, maintenance, inspection and alteration/repair of any utility and building system, controls, sub-systems and accessories. Perform test procedures standard to the trade (e.g., readings on boilers, testing medium temperature water, steam condensate, water hardness) to maintain and extend equipment life. Test and calibrate systems, diagnose problems and initiate/complete repairs. Communicate and document corrective actions to avoid malfunctions, energy waste, shutdowns or damage. Install, operate, maintain, modify, alter or repair HVAC controls, sub-systems and accessories (electric, electronic, pneumatic, digitally controlled Building Automation Systems). Monitor, troubleshoot, calibrate and commission system features including BACnet and N2 architectures, GX9100 software, and Metasys programs using HVAC Pro Software. Monitor and maintain electrical and electronic control systems, as well as process controls for utilities and building operations.

Maintain acceptable attendance, punctuality and deadlines. Participate in training sessions and seminars. Maintain proficiency and continually update knowledge through courses and industry contacts. Establish and maintain positive working relationships within the department and campus community.

Minimum Qualifications

Environmental Protection Agency Certification

(EPA) or commitment to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

Journey-level knowledge/experience in HVAC and Building Automation Systems; may serve as department specialist on Building Automation Systems.

Knowledge/experience configuring Metasys programs using HVAC Pro Software; experience with BACnet & N2 architectures; commissioning and troubleshooting GX9100 software.

Experience using and maintaining hand and power tools related to job functions.

Experience performing tests for systems operations and communicating repair needs to supervision.

Experience troubleshooting operational problems and making adjustments or repairs.

Knowledge reading/interpreting blueprints and system diagrams.

Knowledge of building codes and regulations; ability to follow standards concerning space, access, utilities, fire and safety requirements.

Fundamental engineering understanding of systems and equipment.

Ability to work independently and in teams; effective communication written and oral.

Ability to work in a service-oriented environment with changing priorities.

Ability to follow through on assignments and understand University/Department policies.

Preferred Qualifications

Healthcare environment experience.

Hands-on industrial plumbing, electrical and mechanical experience.

Experience with Climatec and Metasys digital control systems.

Ability to maintain DI and soft water systems; maintain industrial belts and motors.

Special Conditions

Ability to operate University vehicles for work-related tasks; occasional travel may be required.

Physical ability to perform tasks; may need to move through limited access spaces and cover distances on foot.

Work in morgues or laboratories where biological material may be present.

Subject to varying hours and locations; overtime or alternate shifts may be required.

Pay and Application Details Pay Scale:

$49.94 / Hour
