The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting Physicians, Mid-Level Practitioners, and Registered Nurses with the evaluation, management, and treatment of patients in an ambulatory care setting. The Medical Assistant maintains patient flow, upkeeps exam and treatment rooms, and performs basic skills such as vital signs and point-of-care testing. The position may administer intramuscular injections, immunizations, small-volume nebulizer treatment, and over-the-counter medications under the direction of a Physician. The role adheres to Rush mission, vision and values and complies with Rush policies and procedures, including Customer Service Standards. Responsibilities
Coordinates and maintains organized patient flow. Performs patient intake: vital signs, height and weight, reason for visit, interim history, allergies, medication lists, and other interventions as required. Prepares patient for exam based on reason for visit. Assists provider with procedures and supports patient care. Reviews appointment schedules and ensures all patient charts are available for the visit. Ensures ancillary reports and required paperwork are available to the provider at the time of visit. Performs basic lab and testing procedures according to standards. Performs phlebotomy and EKGs. Administers immunizations as ordered by Physician. Administers intramuscular or subcutaneous medications after competency has been assessed, verified and documented. Performs nebulizer treatments in the clinic setting after competency has been assessed, verified and documented. Performs Tuberculin skin testing upon the order of the Physician. Documents administration of medications in Epic per policy or protocol. Cleans, prepares and stocks exam rooms, treatment rooms, and workstations. Calls patients regarding test results and medical instruction under the direction of a Physician. Calls in medication refills under the direction of a Physician or protocol. Maintains patient care information in the outpatient medical record according to standards. Assists with scheduling of patient tests, procedures, and follow-up appointments. Maintains inventory of medical and linen supplies and quality control for equipment. Provides cross coverage to other clinical areas as assigned and participates in quality improvement projects. Maintains compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) standards and other regulatory bodies. Unit-specific duties as needed. Rush is an equal opportunity employer. High school diploma/GED required. Clinical Medical Assistant Certification by AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NAHP, AAH, or NHA required upon hire (includes injections and medication administration). Graduates of a Rush Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program must obtain Clinical Medical Assistant Certification within six months of hire. Current CPR certification required on start date.
