Summary of Position
The
Image Pathologist Assistant
is responsible for performing responsibilities pertaining to Quantitative Image Analysis, including organizing and conducting all aspects of quantitative biomarker assessment, chromogenic in situ hybridization studies, and evaluating nerve fiber quality for epidermal and sweat gland nerve density. This dynamic position performs functions related to microscopic examination, quantitative digital image analysis, reporting of results, quality and proficiency, and technical troubleshooting as necessary, including discrepancy resolution. The role requires understanding a wide variety of processes such as tissue grossing, histology, pathology reports, microscopic examination, and proficiency in semi-quantitative and quantitative measuring of biomarker expression, CISH quantitation, and other duties as assigned following approved Standard Operating Procedures. Key Job Elements
Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing Adheres to quality control policies; documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance Follows established policies and procedures when test systems are not within the acceptable performance level Identifies problems that may affect test performance or reporting and corrects them or notifies Supervisors/Director Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from specifications Coordinates workflow for all cases Researches, verifies, corrects, and communicates quality and discrepancy issues with complex reasoning and proper documentation Facilitates workflow with histology and IHC labs Assesses quality of IHC by microscopic examination before image analysis Incorporates quality assessment into daily screening; maintains accurate records Performs QC checks of controls to ensure accuracy of immunohistochemistry staining Photomicrographs representative areas of biomarkers for the final report and performs QC during image capture Calibrates the image analysis system per protocol; maintains records Performs quantitative image analysis, annotates areas, and creates preliminary reports for pathologist sign-out Participates in all proficiency testing as outlined by the pathology director Prioritizes and analyzes cases accurately Interacts with pathologists regarding image analysis activities and works under direct supervision Identifies problems that may affect test performance or reporting and notifies the Director of Pathology as needed Maintains service records for image analysis equipment; troubleshoots and requests service as needed Maintains confidentiality of patient, physician, employee, client, vendor, and company information Ensures compliance with local, federal, CLIA, CAP, and NYS DOH regulations Performs quality control and quality assurance tests; maintains necessary documentation and logs Reports concerns of test quality and/or safety to supervisor/director Maintains a clean work environment Understands and uses Laboratory Information Systems Qualifications
Knowledge / Experience Degree in biological, chemical, or chemical laboratory science or related field, and/or Must meet CLIA (1988) criteria to perform high complexity testing Ability to communicate effectively Strict adherence to defined clinical testing protocols Demonstrated skills and high attention to detail in technical data interpretation and troubleshooting Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical ability to distinguish fine detail Manual dexterity to use laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques Ability to sit for long periods Ability to perform repetitive motion Willingness to work overtime if necessary Environment
