Overview

Assistant Director of Biosafety is responsible for a leading role in the biological safety program at Tulane University Uptown and Downtown campuses. Under the direction of the Executive Director of Biosafety, the AD will develop, implement, and continually evaluate programs involving biological agents, including BSL3 biocontainment and select agent and toxins research. The Assistant Director serves as the Institutional Biosafety Officer (BSO). The AD provides guidance in biosafety matters including regulation interpretation, biological containment, biosafety and biosecurity practices, risk assessment and medical surveillance/occupational health considerations to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state and local environmental, health, and safety regulations as per NIH/OSP, CDC, APHIS, OSHA, DOT and other regulatory agencies. Location: New Orleans, LA Responsibilities

Lead the biological safety program for Tulane University Uptown and Downtown campuses. Develop, implement, and continually evaluate programs involving biological agents, including BSL3 biocontainment and select agent and toxins research. Serve as the Institutional Biosafety Officer (BSO). Provide guidance in all biosafety matters, including regulation interpretation, containment, biosafety and biosecurity practices, risk assessment, and medical surveillance/occupational health considerations to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations (as per NIH/OSP, CDC, APHIS, OSHA, DOT, and other regulatory agencies). Required Qualifications

Advanced degree in safety, industrial hygiene, microbiology, molecular biology, biology, public health or other related discipline is required. Five (5) years of experience as a biosafety professional or supporting the management of biosafety containment facilities, to include work experience as a laboratorian or research scientist in a biological laboratory. Registered Biosafety Professional or Certified Biological Safety Professional. Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a University research environment. Background accessing and performing facility verification in laboratories working with infectious materials and/or those laboratories using BSL3/ABSL3 or other high-consequence biological pathogens. Knowledge of the NIH Guidelines and experience with IBC and IACUC protocols. Ten (10) or more years of experience as a biosafety professional or supporting the management of biosafety containment facilities. Three (3) or more years of supervisory experience.
