Summary
Midwifery, as practiced by Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) within the Harris Health System (HHS), includes care of childbearing people during pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Midwives also care for newborns immediately following birth and family planning services, including preconception care, prescription of contraception, placement, removal, and management of contraceptive devices. Other responsibilities include sexual, reproductive, and gynecologic healthcare; primary care for women from adolescence throughout their lifespan; initial and ongoing comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and treatment; the prescription of medications, supplements, and other pharmacotherapeutics. In addition to those responsibilities mentioned above, it also includes physical examinations; admission, management, and discharge of childbearing people requiring hospitalization, which includes ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic tests; ordering medical devices, durable medical equipment, and home health services; health promotion, disease prevention, risk assessment management, and individualized wellness education and counseling.
Job Duties
Regular attendance at departmental meetings. Participation in quality improvement activities. Participation in OB clinical simulations and continuing education. Coverage at Ben Taub Hospital on holidays, nights, and weekends. In addition to coverage at Ben Taub Hospital and community clinics during regular business hours; completion of required online training through HHS and BCM. Participation in the education and training of BCM learners, including medical students, allied health students, and residents; participation in the education and precepting of student nurse-midwives who are selected for a clinical placement with the BCM Midwifery Service. Contribution to the mission of BCM through scholarship, research, teaching, and clinical excellence. Maintenance of all applicable licenses, certifications, and registrations, including recertification through the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) every five years; and current NRP and BLS certification.
Minimum Qualifications
Education Required: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nursing. Experience Preferred: None Required. Certification/Licenses/Registration Required: Current licensing as a Registered Nurse and status as an Advanced Practice Nurse/Nurse-midwife by the Texas State Board of Nurse-Examiners. Current certification by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB). Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
