Job Description
Essential Functions:
Provides surgical pathology, clinical pathology, or autopsy diagnostic services including frozen section diagnosis, gross examination, microscopic examination, report generation and case coding. Performs autopsies, completes death certificates, coordinates work with funeral homes, records preliminary findings and generates a comprehensive autopsy report. Provides input to budget development, new procedure development, cost containment, supplier and equipment selection, and utilization monitoring. Assists in the supervision of technical staff and provides input to the annual performance appraisals of key staff. Directly supervises and instructs residents and fellows during daily work. Contributes to medical and allied health student teaching during rotations. Contributes to lectures and laboratories for medical students and allied health students as requested. Troubleshoots, modernizes, or otherwise improves services from the department, particularly within assigned clinical area. Completes small projects and investigations, some of which may result in publications or national conference presentations. Collaborates to ensure regulatory, state, and federal compliance in the section as well as compliance with other mandatory and voluntary applicable standards. Ensures that services and practices fulfill clinical care requirements. Performs and analyzes quality improvement projects. Contributes to appropriate local and national professional organizations through activities such as serving on committees and giving presentations at annual meetings. Represents on hospital and medical staff committees. Offers expertise to daily activities including sample analysis, procedure writing, problem resolution, complex workups, information services, outpatient phlebotomy, referral testing, marketing, and customer service. Serves as the primary contact for members of the clinical staff. Collects, photographs, prepares, and presents autopsy, surgical and laboratory cases chosen for presentation at interdepartmental case review conferences and grand rounds. Provides in-service didactic presentations, develops, distributes, and publishes educational articles, participates in research projects, and contributes to peer reviewed journals.
Education Requirement
Graduate of an accredited medical or osteopathic school or international equivalent, M.D. followed by a residency in pathology.
Licensure Requirement
Medical License in the State of Ohio, required. Ability to obtain and maintain an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Ohio.
Certifications
Board certified or Board eligible in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology, required. Board certification/eligibility in Pediatric Pathology (if appropriate) and recertification as needed.
Skills
Working knowledge of anatomic, physiologic, biochemical, and genetic basis of disease processes, required. Analytical and interpersonal skills necessary to develop and implement goals and policies; to provide effective departmental leadership; and to interact successfully with external contacts including medical, nursing, and administrative staff. Publication in professional journals is highly desirable. Writing experience is essential. Ability to obtain and maintain an appointment to the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Medical Staff in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
