Engineering Technologist 4 - Shift Technical Engineer role at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The position supports 24/7 operations at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility and is part of a brand-new Shift Technical Engineering Team within the Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division Essential Balance of Plant Group (PFE-EBP).

What You Will Do

Join a fast paced and performance-focused team supporting nuclear operations in defense of our nation. The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division Essential Balance of Plant Group (PFE-EBP) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking multiple experienced Engineering Technologists to be part of a brand-new Shift Technical Engineering Team, a mission-critical team that will support 24/7 operations at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility. This position will work rotating 12-hour shifts aligned with the TA-55 Operations Center.

Responsibilities Provide broad technical expertise and input to the Operations Center and will interface with Cognitive System Engineers, Programmatic Groups, Maintenance Groups, and others to help ensure accomplishment of the LANL mission.

Provide proactive support to ensure Technical Safety Requirements, including Limiting Conditions of Operation and Documented Safety Analyses, are met.

Act as the first point of contact for technical and operating challenges that arise during ongoing construction activities at the plutonium facility.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Expert level technical experience in an operating facility (e.g. nuclear facility, power plants, industrial facilities, etc.).

Familiarity with the design and operation of standard facility equipment to include pumps, motors, HVAC systems, diesel generators, electrical distribution systems, etc.

Understanding of facility instrumentation and control systems.

Expert level experience in troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems.

Demonstrated advanced experience assisting with preparing technical reports and studies as part of establishing and maintaining Technical Baseline for new and existing facility structural systems.

Thorough knowledge of nuclear facility engineering principles and procedures, guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.

Thorough knowledge of nuclear facility engineering work planning and control methods.

Ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and written with management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.

Ability to work independently with minimal guidance for assigned tasks.

Thorough knowledge of project and process nuclear facility engineering practices.

Viewed as subject matter expert within nuclear facility engineering field at the Laboratory.

Expected to lead significant portions of nuclear facility engineering projects or teams in support of meeting mission deliverables.

Ability to complete assignments that are self-initiated and mostly self-supervised.

Performs peer review of the work of others within their own organization.

Mentors and trains junior staff

Demonstrated ability to work in an industrial/production environment

Education/Experience:

Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications Prior experience as an SRO, STE, STA, operations technician, non-licensed operator, etc. at a nuclear facility is highly desired.

Familiarity with LANL Conduct of Operations, Engineering Standards, and Configuration Management.

Familiarity with nuclear facility Technical Safety Requirements, Limiting Conditions of Operation, and Documented Safety Analyses (Safety Analysis Reports).

Experience with shift work.

Knowledge of DOE Orders and Standards pertaining to operating nuclear facilities.

Knowledge of relevant Codes and Standards such as ASME BPVC and the NEC.

Active DOE Q Clearance

Human Reliability Program certification, current or previously certified.

Essential Job Functions

(can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): General Physical Mobility, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending. Specific Physical Mobility use of both hands, use of both arms, use of both legs, use of both feet, carry/lift up to 20 pounds.

Work Environment

Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule.

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. The position commitment for this position is 1 year or 2 years.

Security/Clearance & Eligibility

Clearance:

Q clearance is required. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a clearance. See DOE orders for details. This position may require additional authorization to access classified information.

Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is generally required.

HRP

This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 CFR Part 712, including ongoing drug and alcohol testing and periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a policy that includes random drug testing. Federal law supersedes state laws on marijuana.
