Perform skilled technical duties and manual work in the operation and maintenance of the City of Golden’s 12 MGD Water Treatment Plant (WTP), including water production, treatment, and storage operations, in compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and City of Golden safety standards. Operate and monitor plant systems, conduct routine plant rounds, identify issues in equipment and treatment processes through inspection. Conduct startup and shutdown of water treatment plant systems in accordance with operational protocols. Monitor and control plant operations using SCADA and manual methods, including reading gauges, meters, instrumentation, graphs, control panels, and laboratory analyses. Adjust plant operations to changing needs; manage pumps, raw water flows, flow valves, and chemical feed systems to meet water demand. Maintain detailed operational records, test logs, and reports for regulatory and internal use. Perform and interpret lab tests to guide process adjustments for turbidity, alkalinity, chlorine residual, pH, and taste & odor; compile readings into hourly, daily, and monthly reports. Apply chemistry and math to interpret lab data and make water quality decisions. Monitor chemical supplies and manage chemical storage; calculate flow rates and calibrate dosing of chemical feed systems; receive and oversee chemical deliveries with safety adherence. Drain and inspect plant structures, clean tanks, screens, filters, and pumps. Coordinate with Environmental Services and Utilities Divisions to ensure regulatory compliance and optimal water quality. Calibrate and perform repairs on plant instrumentation to ensure accuracy and reliability. Perform related duties and support day-to-day operations, including cleaning and maintenance, draining tanks, and flushing lines. Operate water treatment residual dewatering equipment; follow and write SOPs; practice safe work habits; respond to alarms, emergencies, and after-hours calls; train and mentor new employees; maintain certifications and continuing education; participate in capital improvement projects; assist with plant tours; assist in other Utilities operations during emergencies; record maintenance activities and work orders in asset management software; support energy efficiency and sustainability efforts. Perform other duties as assigned. Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or GED and appropriate Colorado Water Operator Certification. An associate’s degree in water technology or water quality management is preferred. Must have basic computer skills (Microsoft Word/Excel). Familiarity with SCADA or HMI systems is a plus. Class A requires a current Colorado Class A Water Operators A License with a minimum of 4 years related experience or an approved equivalent combination of education and experience. Class B requires a Class B license with a minimum of 3 years related experience; Class C requires a Class C license with a minimum of 2 years related experience. Class D requires passing the D certification. Trainee category is entry level and requires passing the D certification within 12 months of hire. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license and a good driving record. Colorado Water Operators Certification license required (Class A, B, C, or D). Class D required within 12 months of hire for those hired as Trainees. Language, Math, Reasoning and Other Skills
Language skills:
Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions; write routine reports and correspondence; speak effectively to groups; respond to public inquiries. Mathematical skills:
Ability to calculate proportions, percentages, area, and volume; apply algebra and geometry; compute dosages and flows. Reasoning ability:
Ability to carry out instructions and solve problems with concrete variables in complex situations. Other skills:
Knowledge of chemistry and biology as applied to water purification; ability to work independently and in a team; remain calm during emergencies. Materials & Equipment Directly Used
Ferric sulfate, sodium hypochlorite, potassium permanganate, polymer, and sodium hydroxide are used in the treatment process. Equipment includes pumps, motors, valves, meters, tanks, compressors, and computers. Physical Demands
Regular standing and walking; use of hands; reach, bend, and climb as needed; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds or more of chemicals. Work Environment
