JOB SUMMARY: The Quantitative Population Geneticist will lead efforts to combine multi-omics data, phenomics, and data science to conserve germplasm and to discover, optimize, and introgress novel traits from genebank collections into pre-breeding or breeding programs. The role includes generating high-quality structural and functional genomic resources for complex species and contributing to gene discovery and trait identification that enable breeders to improve crop resilience and quality. Other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
40% - Essential - Develop deep understanding of the crop conservation and improvement continuum to enable development of unique products from crops; lead or participate in trait discovery projects focusing on resilience and quality, including planning, design, coordination, and execution with a multidisciplinary team.
35% - Essential - Analyze large datasets including multi-omics and phenotypic data; generate predictive models or tools to optimize product development; support genebank repositories and breeding teams to implement new methods for conservation and improvement.
25% - Essential - Contribute to research strategies for improved conservation and utilization; prepare and contribute to project documentation, scientific reports, publications, and presentations that convey progress and challenges.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Doctoral / Professional Degree in Quantitative or Population Genetics as related to conservation or agricultural applications.
Work Experience: 2+ years of successful experience managing and executing research projects.
Job Knowledge
Firm working knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures and the ability to apply them in varied situations.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Manages work of others, including hiring, training, development, performance feedback, and corrective action; plans organizational structure and job content.
Budgetary Responsibilities
Provides input into budgeting and oversees fund allocation.
Physical Requirements
Stand for prolonged periods; sit for extended periods; walk or move about; use hands or feet to operate machinery or equipment; ascend/descend stairs or ladders; position self to perform tasks; communicate and inspect visually; move or lift objects as needed.
Working Conditions
Occasional exposure to heat or cold, dust/fumes, wet or humid conditions, noise, or mechanical hazards.
Work Schedule Standard Hours: 37.5
Compensation Information Expected Salary Range: $54,334.00 - $80,000.00
Salary is dependent upon factors including experience, knowledge, skills, and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.
Additional Information
ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL: Normal Operations; follow emergency facility closure directives; not normally expected to work on-site during emergencies.
