The Medical Technologist performs high complexity, routine and specialized clinical lab tests for use in diagnosis and treatment of patients by physicians. The Medical Technologist is expected to use independent judgment to give the physician information to diagnose and treat illness and to consult with the physician about test results as needed. Responsibilities
Perform high complexity tests as appropriate for testing department and shift. Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results. Document all corrective actions when the test process deviates from established specifications; do not report patient results until corrective actions are completed and the test is performing as expected. Perform proficiency testing samples and maintain records showing testing is performed in the same manner as patient samples. Adhere to quality control policies; document control activities, calibrations and maintenance; notify the appropriate personnel if out-of-control situations cannot be resolved. Identify problems that may affect test performance or reporting; correct the problem or notify the appropriate supervisor if unresolved. Assist in orientation, instruction, and evaluation of students and new employees. Prepare reagents and supplies according to precise formulas as needed. Utilize the LIS for patient accessioning and results; monitor incomplete and collection lists. Operate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments as specified. Plan work to maximize productivity and minimize carryover; communicate essential information about patient samples or instrument performance to the next shift and other staff. Act as a resource for phlebotomy if trained appropriately. Review abnormal patient reports daily; normal reports weekly. Maintain and disinfect work area. Assist with coverage of pneumatic tube system, processing and distributing specimens. Handle biohazard wastes according to policy. Assist in evaluation and validation of testing systems. Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient, co-worker and business information. Use proper judgment in releasing information and take appropriate actions. Perform any job-related duties assigned by competent authority and help other departments as qualifications permit. Follow policies, procedures and safety standards; complete required education assignments annually and participate in quality improvement initiatives as requested. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education:
None specified; however, must meet standards for achievement of license/certification as required by the issuing authority. Minimum Experience:
Six (6) months experience is desired, but not required. Licensure Requirement:
Current Tennessee State License as a Medical Technologist. Certification by ASCP or NCA is preferred. Employment type
