This role is responsible for decontamination, assembly and sterilization of all instruments used throughout the hospital, including general surgical instrumentation. Responsibilities include receiving, sorting, decontamination, inspection and packaging of instruments, identifying appropriate sterilization methods and cycles, documenting all sterile processes, and accurate inventory assignment related to the case cart build process. The position may rotate through all areas of sterile processing to support the department while adhering to policies and procedures. May have oversight of the area during shift with supervisory backup. Responsibilities

Receive soiled, used, and/or contaminated equipment, surgical instruments, scopes, and supplies from Operating Rooms, patient care units, and specialized areas; document arrival and cleaning process using asset tracking software. Disassemble items as needed before selecting the appropriate cleaning method. Identify items in need of repair upon receipt and maintain information during the cleaning process. Use appropriate manual cleaning tools and enzymatic detergent, flushing devices, ultrasonic bath, leak testers, etc., to achieve instrument decontamination. Use appropriate automated cleaning tools, load and select cycles on automated washers. Document all work performed using instrument tracking software. Inspect and assemble equipment, instruments, scopes, and instrument sets; verify functionality and conformance to instrument recipes. Document missing items from instrument sets; escalate to SPD Supervisor or Designee as needed. Select packaging methods and attach external indicators/labels; ensure sterilization accessories are used as required. Transport items to sterilization as needed. Interpret package labeling to select appropriate sterilization method and cycle (e.g., Steam, Hydrogen Peroxide Plasma). Inspect packages for proper indicators, filters, and labels; return non-satisfactory products to instrument room. Load sterilizers to ensure cycle completion; perform routine sterilizer testing and maintenance, including biological monitoring, leak tests, Bowie-Dick tests, and daily/weekly maintenance as appropriate. Document results and escalate positive results. Gather surgical instruments and disposable supplies from patient-specific pick lists as requested by the attending surgeon or Peri-Operative representative. Document case cart build process in instrument tracking software; keep records updated to maintain needs list integrity. Inspect items during pick process to ensure package integrity, expiration compliance, and appropriate substitutions. Communicate unmet surgical supply requests to leadership for resolution. Return unused supplies to proper stock locations after procedures. Wear PPE as required and maintain a clean work area. May provide leadership, direction and training to other teammates; may supervise shift staff and instruct on proper care of surgical instruments and sterility policies. Effectively communicate shift responsibilities and collaborate with department supervisors and OR personnel to resolve issues. Anticipate daily and next-day requirements for instrumentation, equipment and supplies to meet needs and manage workload across shifts. Monitor kit assembly and case-cart setups for completeness and accuracy; resolve conflicts or shortages with satisfactory substitutions; document supply conflicts and shortages appropriately with CPD and Nursing staff. Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Central Services Technician National Certification (CRCST) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) required within 12 months of hire. Two (2) years of Central Processing experience. Physical Requirements

Frequently required to lift, reach, carry, push and pull 40-50 pounds or more. Stand for eight hours or length of assignment; may involve a combination of standing and sitting. Ability to perceive and respond to physical attributes, temperatures, and textures; good hearing for communication; visual acuity for monitoring alarms and color codes. Skills & Abilities

Efficient operation of department equipment; knowledge of general and specialty instrumentation. Ability to follow instructions, demonstrate conscientiousness regarding procedures, and meet deadlines while adapting to changing priorities. Strong English reading/writing and verbal communication; good telephone and customer service skills. Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office and Instrument Tracking systems; knowledge of hospital operations, infection control, and medical terminology. Seniority level
