The Design Engineer is accountable for assuring all new products are designed to meet performance specifications as well as pertinent regulatory codes & standards. This position will design, test, and support the implementation of Mueller’s new products in a cross functional setting.
Primary Responsibilities:
Support design teams, including some leadership responsibilities, in a collaborative, fast pace, dynamic environment, working with other departments to develop and launch new products.
Build relationships with business partners internal to the group/department and external to the company. May include leading some activities.
Understand the requirements of customers, product management, regulatory, codes, standards, manufacturing, and quality.
Support the review of marketing requirements.
Support creation/authoring of project technical specifications and charter documents.
Develop designs that meet project marketing requirements, technical specifications, and charter documents.
Work with more experienced staff and sometimes lead a design or component team in planning, design, prototype procurement, testing, and documentation, iterating as required through the Mueller phase gate system to develop new products.
Contribute to design failure mode and effect analysis (DFMEA) sessions with cross functional teams.
Support and sometimes lead cross-functional design teams to develop high-quality design documentation, in the form of test reports, drawings, and various analyses.
Investigate and resolve design performance characteristics deviations via root-cause analysis and other problem-solving activities to identify and implement effective corrective actions.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
2+ years of experience in Mechanical design using CREO or Solidworks or equivalent CAD software
Competent communication, presentation, and leadership skills
Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
Well-developed design, technical, and analytical skills
Competent knowledge of casting, machining, plastic injection molding, rubber compounds, and mechatronics processes.
Competent knowledge of testing methodologies, testing processes, and standards.
Competent knowledge of DFMEAs and root cause analysis.
Preferred Qualifications:
MIL-STD-810, AWWA C115-20, AWWA C-715, and NSF/ANSI 61 and 372
GD&T knowledge
Mechanical FEA and/or CFD experience
Introductory knowledge of six sigma (Yellow/Green Belt)
PMP certification
FE/EIT
Master Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Waterproofing enclosures
Designing enclosures housing electronics
Potting and conformal coating electronics
Familiar with different manufacturing processes
Adhesive knowledge
3D printing and other rapid prototyping processes
Kanban, 8D, Fishbone, or 5 Why problem solving methodology
Drop, impact, compression, pressure, salt fog, chemical bath exposure, and helium leak check product testing
Electromechanical and PLC programming experience
