Overview
Optomechanical Engineer role at Snap Inc. Spectacles team. We are focused on pushing the boundaries of what a camera can be, specifically overlaying computing on the real world. Next Generation Spectacles are our first pair of glasses that bring augmented reality to life.
What you’ll do
Design CAD sub-assemblies and interfaces to larger CAD assemblies for optical components
Perform rigorous tolerance analyses to ensure mechanical feasibility of the designs
Create detailed, toleranced 2D drawings with FAI for optical & mechanical components based on design for manufacturing considering supplier’s fabrication methods, and metrology capabilities
Run structural and thermal FEA simulations to evaluate performance and reliability over a variety of conditions
Evaluate and select materials capable of achieving high-quality module performance while suitable for mass production
Travel to and work with overseas suppliers to manufacture components and assist with failure analysis
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Familiarity with mechanical and thermal properties of glass, plastic, metal, and electrical component materials commonly used in optical modules
Knowledge of epoxies and their material properties
Strong understanding of GD&T and mechanical metrology
Understanding of the basic principles of optics
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, optical engineering, mechatronics engineering, physics, or related field or equivalent years of experience
3+ years of experience designing optical modules (e.g., cameras, displays, depth sensors) for high-volume consumer electronics
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with CAD design using NX
Experience in opto-mechanical mounting, baffling, and housing with rigorous tolerance analysis
Experience building and evaluating structural and thermal FEA models
Expertise in plastic injection molding and stamped metal design, manufacturing, process, and metrology
Experience with PCB design
Compensation and Benefits In the United States, work locations are assigned a pay zone which determines the salary range for the position. The starting pay is based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions and may be negotiable within the salary range. Zone A (CA, WA, NYC): $157,000-$235,000; Zone B: $149,000-$223,000; Zone C: $133,000-$200,000. This position is eligible for equity in the form of RSUs. Benefits include paid parental leave, medical coverage, mental health support, and compensation packages that align with Snap’s long-term success.
