A day in the life of the Field Operations Technician 1 includes, but is not limited to: Listen, collaborate, and apply advanced troubleshooting abilities, take direct instruction from Senior Technicians, and support the team at solar+battery facilities at Waikoloa (Big Island) and other sites under construction in performing preventative and corrective maintenance and supporting ongoing construction activities. Build and be part of a motivated TEAM of technicians with the Team Leader to troubleshoot and repair all equipment at the facility safely and proactively. The equipment to learn and maintain includes PV solar modules, PV arrays, inverters, and battery energy storage system (BESS containers). Effective communication, teamwork, and the ability to courteously coordinate with site teams are essential. The role involves prioritizing concerns, developing action plans, and ensuring equipment operates at maximum efficiency to keep customers’ grids stable for local communities. You will assist, lead, coordinate, and support third-party technicians in site locations for preventative and corrective maintenance and ongoing construction activities. You will assist and coordinate the safe, efficient, and reliable delivery of field services to facility owners and assist the Team Leader and site technicians in planning to meet site and regional maintenance obligations. You will work closely with the Team Leader and technicians to remediate site issues and enhance the operating portfolio’s performance. The goal is maximum equipment availability, with safety and quality as core to AES Clean Energy’s operations and culture. Qualifications include integrity, training, and qualification within the TEAM, and a commitment to best performance through ownership, knowledge, procedural compliance, a questioning attitude, and formal use of procedure. The successful candidate will have experience in operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of AC and DC electrical systems of varying types and voltages—especially PV solar systems and substations (MV/HV). The position is onsite at Kuihelani Maui solar+battery Facility, with some remote work required to support the Hawaii region and other sites under construction. Key Responsibilities
Listen, collaborate, and apply knowledge, skills, and abilities as Technician 1, including advanced troubleshooting in accordance with applicable safety and environmental obligations; responsible for preventative and corrective O&M activities assigned to the team. Stop unsafe work, report and correct unsafe conditions or hazards; review and submit applicable accident/incident reports. Work with and support the Lead Technician and Regional Safety Manager. Identify opportunities for continuous improvement of O&M activities to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable delivery of field services. Ensure standard maintenance for vehicles and equipment and assist in addressing repair needs; coordinate use of shared equipment. Assist or support warranty claims processes with EPC providers and equipment vendors. Assist in scheduling and implementing site training and qualification efforts. Assist in third-party contractor and vendor identification and onboarding; develop work scopes and manage/schedule contractors as needed. Assist the Lead Tech and Team Lead and technicians; maintain an annual on-call schedule and communicate it as needed; respond to after-hours emergency situations as necessary. Ensure timely, complete, and high-quality documentation related to O&M activities (service tickets, maintenance reports, switching orders, safety documentation such as JHAs/JSAs, Safe Work Permits, LOTO, Energized Electrical Work Permits, and excavation permits); effective communication with computer devices (IPad, iPhone). Assist and ensure accurate tracking of inventory levels; initiate re-order of consumables and spare parts as needed. Collaborate with procurement for inventory tracking and parts re-ordering as needed. As needed, participate in construction/commissioning of facilities within the region to ensure a high-quality build, successful commissioning, timely punch list closeout, and smooth transition to the O&M Team. Ensure compliance with EHSS, regional and federal regulations, and AES company policies; stay abreast of applicable technical and safety standards and share with the team. Support other duties and administrative tasks as assigned by management. Skills and Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to be part of a team and achieve goals. Technical degree or equivalent Journeyman qualification is a plus; one year of experience as a solar PV technician or three years’ experience in a power plant (utility-scale electrical systems). Specific equipment knowledge includes Combiner Box (1500 Vdc), Inverter (three-phase 850Vac), ACDC (1216-1500 Vdc), DCDC (625-1475 Vdc SOC), BESS container (E4L): 1312 Vdc MAX. Knowledgeable in systems, processes and protocols guiding the operations and maintenance of industrial PV solar plants and electrical systems (OSHA standards, NFPA 70e, Lockout/Tagout/Grounding, etc.). Operation of relays, pad-mounted switchgear, PV modules, PV arrays, inverters, and battery storage containers. Professionalism, excellent communication skills, strong work ethic, and ability to interpret technical documents; results-oriented with a problem-solving mindset. Enthusiasm for solving problems, willingness to maintain knowledge and teach others on the team. Foundational electrical or mechanical knowledge (single-craft journeyman skills); knowledge of electrical measurements, control circuits, and electrical theory in power plants. Competence with computer systems including CMMS, DAS/SCADA, maintenance programs, and Microsoft Office. Commitment to safety culture and incident-free work environment; safety should be part of your DNA. NFPA 70E and OSHA 30 Certification. Candidates must provide documentation for college degrees and certifications; TWIC card required.
