Certified Medical Assistant III - Pharmacy role at Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley. The Medical Assistant III supports pharmacy and care teams, assisting physicians with preparing patients for examination, setting up exam rooms, handling paperwork, and processing medication refills in collaboration with providers. Position: Certified Medical Assistant III - Pharmacy Reports To: Back Office Supervisor Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt Responsibilities
Set up the examining rooms and prepare patients to be seen by the medical provider. Perform routine back-office clinical tasks: vital signs, chief complaints, simple lab (HET, AU, UPT, EKG and others as needed). Keep instruments and examining rooms clean and orderly; sterilize instruments. Follow daily procedures per available protocols; assist providers during scope exams or procedures. Assist with filling Prior Authorization forms under the guidance of a physician; answer phone calls and help schedule appointments; transfer calls to the assigned RN if questions exceed scope or triage is required. Participate in recall activities for patients due for tests. Process pharmacy medication refill requests under the guidance of a provider. Request ER records for patients seen in the ED. Fill out forms for Incontinence supplies, DME, etc.; fax necessary documents and follow up with approval processes until authorization is obtained. Help fill in vaccination records, pertinent vitals, hearing and vision results in school forms for providers to sign off on. Assist patients when their medications are not covered by insurance by calling the pharmacy and the health plan to find alternatives. Serve as the backup Flow Coordinator; assist in obtaining data or reports for monthly statistics. Assist in other supportive services as necessary for the orderly flow of patients (keeping charts orderly, pulling and filing charts, as needed). Attend regular staff meetings and assist patients with filling out questionnaires. Be knowledgeable about immunization schedules, workflow protocols, safe administration techniques, storage and handling, IZ documentation, and data entry for follow-up of immunizations. Assist with tracking and rescheduling of patients per protocol; provide patient education handouts. Comply with IHC HIPAA and privacy policies; participate as a proactive representative of the Patient-Centered Health Home; perform duties using a team-based approach. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent with a medical assistant certification or successful externship at IHC. Fluent in English/Spanish; computer skills are a plus. Minimum of two years experience as a medical assistant in a healthcare setting. Ability to lift and carry 20 lbs required. Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods required. Excellent organizational and customer service skills. Ability to follow written and oral instructions and learn new procedures quickly. Ability to stay calm while working quickly and with a high degree of accuracy. Flexibility, initiative, and reliability. Knowledge of and ability to work with the American Indian community and other minority populations. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Ability to function independently and as a team member within diverse environments and staff composition. Demonstrated ability to perform multiple administrative functions simultaneously in an accurate, organized, and efficient manner; able to multitask in a fast-paced, changing environment. Ability to carry out responsibilities in an honest, ethical and professional manner and demonstrate good judgment. Physical Requirements
Ability to sit, stand and walk for extensive periods of time; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination for nursing care. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds. Ability to stoop, squat, or bend frequently. Corrected vision and hearing within normal range to observe and communicate with patients and staff. Working Conditions
Exposure to a clinical environment with possible exposure to communicable diseases and bloodborne pathogens. Fast-paced and may be stressful with changing conditions. Normal hours are 8:00 am – 5:00 pm with one hour for lunch; hours may vary based on need. Flexibility may be required to perform tasks with limited discretion. Benefits
