Responsibilities
Directly supervises sterile processing personnel during specified shifts, overseeing daily operations to achieve appropriate quality and productivity levels.
Ensure compliance with infection control policies and AAMI, AORN, and Joint Commission standards.
Act as a liaison between the OR and SPD, ensuring instrumentation is ready on time and supporting all department customers.
Assure compliance with infection control and sterilization standards; ensure that sterilization practices and all equipment used for decontamination and sterilization meet quality standards.
Assist staff with performance improvement.
Supervisory responsibilities include staff selection, orientation/onboarding, performance evaluation, counseling, and staff development.
Duties and Responsibilities
Schedules and supervises the work of assigned staff to ensure a smooth department workflow and aligns with department needs.
Acts as a knowledge resource on department processes, technical skills, equipment, supplies, and regulatory requirements.
Selects, trains, and manages the performance of staff; provides daily direction and sets goals for individuals and the team.
Mentors and coaches staff, providing development opportunities.
Coordinates and maintains departmental workflow in decontamination, instrument inspection, cleaning, assembling and packaging of surgical instruments and materials.
Proficiency in instrumentation bar code tracking systems (SPM, Epic, Dove Tree).
Monitors inventory of supplies and equipment; coordinates procurement and stocking activities.
Analyzes usage patterns, recommends optimal par levels, and supports cost reduction opportunities.
Provides information for forecasting future instrumentation/equipment needs; tracks lost or damaged equipment and supplies.
Fosters ongoing communication with staff and ancillary departments; participates in hospital teams as assigned.
Qualifications Education
Associate's degree in a related field preferred.
Two years of sterile processing leadership experience may be substituted for the Associate's degree. This experience is separate from the requirements outlined in the Experience section.
Experience
Minimum of three years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician, including at least one year of leadership experience in a team lead/supervisory or peer leadership capacity.
Strong customer service, team building, multitasking, attention to detail, organization, and demonstrated communication skills (diplomacy and tact) are preferred.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
Current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through an accredited organization (CRCST, HSPA, or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician CBSPD).
