Engineer-in-Training/Professional Engineer
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
The official name for this position will be: Engineer‑In‑Training or Engineer II (The position is determined by the licensure held by the selected applicant, if any).
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists in project management for the planning, design and development of construction drawings, specifications and bid documents.
Designs construction plans and specifications for county engineering projects.
Prioritizes drafting projects and assists in AutoCAD drafting efforts.
Assists with the administration of contracts and grants on engineering projects including preparing progress reports and disbursement request packages.
Assists with long‑range planning of county infrastructure improvement needs.
Reviews and comments on engineering designs and specifications submitted by engineers, architects and developers.
Coordinates with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) on all projects that impact county infrastructure; attends meetings, reviews plans, and works with FDOT consultants on infrastructure conflicts; prepares and/or coordinates with consultants on permits with federal, state and local agencies.
Designs and oversees the development of a database and computer‑aided mapping system for county utilities.
Assists in inspections of engineering projects and prepares comment letters documenting all deficiencies not meeting county standards and specifications; re‑inspects and ensures comments have been addressed.
Provides engineering and construction direction to the general public and county staff.
Troubleshoots maintenance problems.
Prepares detailed cost estimates and time schedules for construction projects.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Engineer Technician
– Associates Degree in engineering, electronics, or CAD supplemented by three (3) years of technical engineering and drafting experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Experience in CAD required. Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline preferred. Valid driver license required.
Engineer‑In‑Training
– Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field (college seniors on track to graduate within 12 months may apply). Water, wastewater, storm‑water or road design and construction experience preferred. Valid driver license required. Fundamentals of Engineering certification and recognition as an Engineer Intern by the State of Florida required. Ability to obtain and maintain a Defense Biometrics Identification System (DBIDS) badge.
Engineer II
– Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field supplemented by four (4) years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience in water and wastewater design and construction, including management of large water and wastewater capital projects. Must be a Florida Professional Engineer or able to acquire licensure within six (6) months. Valid driver license required. Ability to obtain and maintain a DBIDS badge.

Physical Requirements
– Must be able to reach, extend hands in any direction, lift or pull objects up to 100 lbs, work on uneven terrain, use ladders, stairs, scaffolding and confined spaces. Endurance for sustained periods in outdoor conditions.
Language Ability
– Communicate effectively in English; read, write, and prepare technical reports; explain procedures and follow oral and written instructions.
Intelligence, Numerical Aptitude, Interpersonal Temperament
– Apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions; interpret technical instructions; make independent judgments; use numeric skills; exercise tact and courtesy when dealing with professionals, county staff and the general public.
SALARY RANGE Engineer‑Technician: $23.94 – $28.73 hourly Engineer‑In‑Training: $68,536.00 – $82,243.20 annually Engineer II: $77,438.40 – $92,926.08 annually
