Position Summary The Mechanical Designer assists engineers and Product/Staff Designers in developing detailed design drawings and related specifications of mechanical equipment, according to sketches and design proposal specifications. The mechanical designer plays an important role in the development of the product, from design and creation to final production. The designer understands the needs and requirements of the new product or mechanical system. This position will be involved in mass Bill of Material changes, creating part numbers and updating documentation. Creates, manages and maintains accurate lists of all components, parts and material requires to manufacture a product.
Measures of success
Ensure accuracy of bill of materials and documentation
Proficiency with CAD software and ERP/PLM software
Understand ASME Y14 standards
Responsibilities Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Provide 2D and 3D CAD (Computer Aided Design) support in the development of innovative new and existing products
Create engineering procedures with the guidance of the engineers and product designers
Creates and revises detail and assembly drawings by determining tolerances, fits, calculations and lists specifications and materials
Works off detailed sketches provided in developing and/or revising a product
Follow engineering procedures to evaluate designs and modify components and assemblies
Document design for manufacturability
Support Engineering with engineering change notices by creating drawings, creating part numbers and Bill of Material (BOM) changes
Create Bills of Material (BOM) and ensures drawings meet standards while using Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Engineering Change Notice/Product Lifecycle Management (ECN/PLM) systems
Develop and maintain accurate multi-level BOMs, ensuring all components, materials, and specifications are correctly documented
Ensure the integrity of BOM data, including part numbers, and coordinate the setting up of new part numbers
Administer and utilize company Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems to manage BOMs, work orders, and related documentation
Troubleshoot and resolve BOM-related issues, such as inventory discrepancies or work order execution problems
Conduct regular audits of BOMs and work orders to ensure compliance with standards
Apply skills to prepare 3D models and drawings of components and assemblies
Provide internal support for the technical services and sales departments
Serve as project team member
Qualifications
Associate degree in Mechanical Drafting, Drafting and Design Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology or Engineering Design Technology; significant applicable experience may be accepted in lieu of degree
1+ years’ experience in 3D CAD mechanical design, layout of products, Bills of Material creation and engineering change processes; 3+ years of product/mechanical design experience, including 3D CAD mechanical design and layout of products preferred
Certified Solid Works Professional preferred
Knowledge with American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Standards, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9000, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, Tolerance Analysis, Design for Manufacturing and Assembly, manufacturing processes and inspection requirements
Understanding of various manufacturing processes like plastic injection molding, metal parts machining, casting, and sheet metal process a plus
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
Effective oral and written communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, etc.)
Able to work collaboratively and independently as needed
Apply discretion and independent judgement effectively
Understands complex concepts, able to relay concepts to diverse audiences
Able to solve problems with realistic solutions
Adapt to changing priorities without losing focus
Able to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time
Manage time and assignments effectively to meet due dates
Work Environment This position works primarily in an office environment using computers and technology. Verbal and auditory capability are required. Occasional exposure in production plant where large equipment and noise are prevalent. Safety gear is required in these areas.
This position may work from home up to 2 days per week if in good standing with the company.
This position has no direct reports.
