Physical Sciences Inc., an employee-owned company, located 25 miles north of Boston in Andover MA, is seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled Metallurgical Engineer to join our team, focused on the development, processing, and characterization of advanced metallic alloys. The ideal candidate will bring 4–10 years of experience in casting, wrought processing, and/or additive manufacturing, with deep knowledge of physical metallurgy and advanced materials analysis techniques.
Key Responsibilities
Lead or support the development of novel metallic alloys tailored for high-performance applications, including those requiring specific mechanical, thermal, or oxidation resistance properties. Design and execute process development strategies, including casting, wrought processing, powder metallurgy, and additive manufacturing. Apply thermodynamic and kinetic principles to understand and control phase transformations, microstructure evolution, and material behavior during processing. Perform failure analysis, root-cause investigation, and continuous material/process improvement using metallurgical fundamentals. Operate and interpret results from advanced analytical tools such as SEM, TEM, XRD, EDS, and DSC to characterize microstructures and identify material properties. Collaborate with mechanical, manufacturing, and design teams to align material capabilities with system-level requirements. Document technical findings, publish internal reports, and deliver presentations to multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field (M.S. or Ph.D. preferred). U.S. Citizenship 4–10 years of relevant industry, research, or applied R&D experience in metallic materials development and processing. Strong expertise in casting, wrought processing, and/or additive manufacturing. In-depth knowledge of metallurgical phenomena, including phase diagrams, solidification, recrystallization, precipitation, and mechanical behavior. Hands-on experience with materials characterization techniques: SEM, TEM, XRD, EDS, DSC, and metallographic preparation. Demonstrated ability to tailor and optimize alloy chemistries and processing routes to meet performance targets.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with alloy design tools (e.g., Thermo-Calc, CALPHAD-based modeling, JMatPro). Background in thermomechanical treatment development and property enhancement strategies. Familiarity with high-temperature materials, corrosion/oxidation resistance, or lightweight structural metals (e.g., titanium, nickel-based superalloys, aluminum alloys). Experience working in defense, aerospace, or energy sectors. Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
