GILLIG Engineering develops, customizes, and configures GILLIG’s clean technology heavy-duty transit buses. Engineers design, analyze, test, launch, and solve problems across a wide range of technical areas. Electrical Engineering focuses on designing, developing, and optimizing electrical systems and components, including low and high voltage power distribution, CANbus network topology and variation, infotainment/CAD/AVL & surveillance system integration to ensure safety, durability, and performance. Collaboration with cross-functional teams ensures regulatory compliance, production troubleshooting, and cost-effective, manufacturable designs for heavy-duty transit buses. ABOUT THE ROLE
The Electrical Engineer/Senior Electrical Engineer role is a hands-on, design-focused position responsible for transit bus electrical systems. Responsibilities include requirements analysis, concept design, detailed design, problem resolution, vehicle attribute design, BOM development, customer application research, and other duties related to designing, configuring, and industrializing electrical systems for manufacturing heavy-duty transit buses. The role influences systems and components to optimize vehicle functionality and performance. This is a direct, full-time on-site position in Livermore, CA reporting to the Electrical Engineering Manager, with guidance from senior engineers as needed. TECHNICAL FOCUS Apply skills to deliver customized, vehicle-based power and signal distribution systems, including harnesses, devices, fusing, and connectors. Consider routing and environmental conditions for heavy-duty automotive products. Stay current with vehicle electrical power management technology and regulations. Experience with low voltage (12/24VDC) and high voltage (600VDC, 240/480VAC) is required. Experience in electrical harness manufacturing and/or industrial control systems is a plus. IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL
Create and maintain Bill of Materials (BOM), defining appropriate part applications and assembly Troubleshoot vehicle electrical and network issues ADDITIONALLY AT THE SENIOR LEVEL Provide input on modular BOM structure to improve configuration efficiency Apply broader analytical tools (EMC, signal integrity, thermal management) and perform design optimizations Lead BOM structuring, Change Control, PCO, and Engineered Production Change Provide expert input with test engineers to create DVP&R and review results Operate in a primary role, proposing solutions to senior engineers or management QUALIFICATIONS
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related field Minimum 2 years of engineering experience Automotive/heavy-duty vehicle design familiarity; direct experience a plus Familiarity with BOM management Fluency in CAD software such as Zuken E3 or Capital Experience with component suppliers, engineering service suppliers, testing suppliers, and validation engineers Experience in Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Service (DFS), and cost efficiency (Value Engineering) Hands-on troubleshooting, prototyping, testing, and validation (on-site and remote) Working knowledge of tools such as multimeters, power supplies, CANalyzer, and oscilloscopes Experience with vehicle harnessing, component integration, CANbus, antenna systems, and voice/data radio systems Knowledge of RFI/EMC/EMI/ESD or related systems is beneficial Strong written and verbal communication, with ability to collaborate with suppliers, customers, and external partners Versatile team player capable of switching between design, integration, and stakeholder communication Desirable: Experience with Infotainment systems, CAD/AVL/AVM technologies Experience troubleshooting electrical systems using diagnostic tools to form conclusions Strong ability to create and maintain electrical documentation across design platforms ADDITIONALLY AT THE SENIOR LEVEL Minimum 5 years of progressive engineering experience Familiarity with BOM/docs control and revision management; modular BOM experience a plus Knowledge of wiring harness design and formboard drawing with CAD tools Proficiency in DFM/DFS and cost-efficiency approaches Hands-on troubleshooting and testing experience with diagnostic tools WORK ENVIRONMENT
Ability to lift 25 lbs. Extended desk work and computer use Occasional standing, walking, kneeling or squatting Ability to meet physical requirements with or without accommodation Limited travel may be required Ability to navigate a manufacturing environment around heavy machinery and tools Must wear required PPE (safety glasses, bump caps, hearing protection, etc.) Standard start time is 6:00 a.m. (negotiable) EXPECTED COMPENSATION
