Heat Transfer & Fluid Flow Engineer - Fiber Manufacturing role at Owens Corning. The position leads development of new technologies from a fundamental science approach to deliver greater manufacturing productivity and product quality with capital-efficient operations. This requires deep understanding of the physics and engineering challenges involved in fiberizing at high temperatures and rotational speeds, proficiency in mechanical engineering, heat transfer and turbulent fluid flow, and the ability to collect fibers from a high-flow, turbulent air stream to achieve uniform weight distribution and optimal pack structure that contribute to desirable thermal and mechanical properties of the product. The engineer will use experimental work, theoretical models, and advanced numerical modeling tools to design and analyze fiberizing and collection systems, with the goal of enhancing performance in a laboratory and industrial manufacturing plant environment.

Individual contributor with strong collaboration across the team, labs and manufacturing plants Responsibilities

Commit to safety: follow safety standards, identify hazards, improve processes through Design Hazard Eliminations (DHEs), and pursue zero injuries Fiberization Process Development & Implementation: extend fundamental knowledge of centrifugal fiberizing processes Translate knowledge into development of fiberizing systems that substantially improve manufacturing productivity and/or product quality Extend knowledge of fiber collection and pack structure; develop collection systems to improve weight distribution and thermal/mechanical properties Collaborate with extended team to rapidly prototype new concepts; design and perform experiments to validate concepts Drive concepts to plant-level implementation and leverage external partnerships to accelerate progress Produce thorough technical documentation Technical Leadership & Collaboration

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in thermal/fluid sciences (Aeronautical/Chemical Engineering degree with applicable experience) Experience in mechanical design, mechanical drawings, and standards 0-5 years’ industrial design/operations experience 25-35% travel Preferred Experience Experience with commercial CAD, CFD codes, and FEA codes Experience with the design and testing of high-temperature systems that challenge material selection Experience with the design and testing of high-speed rotating systems Experience with extreme environments that limit measurement access Knowledge/experience with combustion system design and/or modelling Knowledge/experience with induction heating and alternative fuels/decarbonization About Owens Corning
