GAI Consultants is seeking a Substation and/or Protection & Controls Engineer 3 for substation-related work. This position will perform substation and protection and controls design, technical guidance/training/mentoring of staff, design reviews, QA/QC review, and enforcement related to all aspects of protection & controls design services.
Responsibilities
Manage, design, and perform QA/QC checks related to technical activities.
Develop and revise drawings for one-lines, grounding, schematics, wiring, control and relaying panels, and coordinate with CAD operators.
Integrate protection and control drawings to interface with physical layout.
Design SCADA interfaces including RTUs, HMIs, and IEDs.
Develop control panel layouts and specifications.
Define project criteria and design specifications including bill of materials.
Design and size auxiliary systems (AC/DC load centers, batteries, chargers).
Design and size conduit, cable, and backup generators.
Order long‑lead item materials.
Perform point‑to‑point checks.
Review junior engineer designs for client standards and close gaps.
Document QA/QC reviews, maintain records, and communicate information to the team.
Travel to offices, meet with clients, and attend project‑specific meetings.
Manage tasks on multiple projects and develop scope of services and cost estimates.
Prioritize competing projects using sound engineering and financial judgment.
Maintain flexibility for shifting deadlines and scope changes.
Manage and prioritize multiple projects under tight deadlines.
Work extended hours or after hours when required.
Technical Responsibilities
Develop and review complete project documents for conformity and quality assurance.
Maintain responsibility for projects, staying informed of standards, regulations, and best practices.
Analyze complex engineering projects to determine design requirements, uncertainties, and constraints.
Apply sustainability concepts to engineering projects.
Project and Task Management
Assign tasks to, and direct, technical and non‑technical staff.
Plan and coordinate detailed aspects of engineering work.
Prepare scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments.
Assist with proposals to provide professional services or obtain funding for projects.
General Characteristics
Apply extensive knowledge of engineering principles and practices.
Modify or extend accepted theories to complete assignments.
Lead tasks and projects of moderately complex scopes.
Develop plans, specifications, and project documents.
Use engineering economics, probability, and statistics to analyze risk.

Possess advanced oral and written communication skills.

Lead project meetings and represent the organization in communications.

Education
B.S. Engineering
Certification / Licensure
Professional Engineer (P.E.) License, reciprocity in multiple states.
Experience
8+ years in substation and protection & controls engineering.
