Overview

Animal Care Specialist - Part-time role at Joybound People & Pets. The Animal Care Department provides the necessary infrastructure for Joybound’s rescue and adoption efforts. The Animal Care Specialist role is to provide the daily care of Joybound’s animals to ensure humane housing. Primary responsibilities include feeding, cleaning, providing enrichment, and medicating the shelter guests while following all proper handling protocols. Principal Duties

Inspire and nurture the human-animal bond and bring people and animals together to enrich each other’s lives. Provide daily care, exercise, enrichment, feeding, and cleaning for dog and cat shelter guests using animal handling skills. Learn and use training techniques to help animals become well-suited for their new homes. Observe and report shelter animals for any unusual symptoms indicative of medical or behavioral problems. Clean and maintain all animal living areas, kitchens, bedding, furniture, and related equipment. Input and print relevant information in animal databases. Deliver medications to cat and dog shelter guests as indicated by Veterinary Clinic staff. Promote a humane and caring attitude toward all animals; maintain professional conduct with staff, volunteers, and the public. Maintain the confidentiality of all information. Collaborate with the training department to execute training and behavior plans. Comply with all applicable safety regulations and Joybound policies; follow safe work practices to ensure safety for self and others. Promote teamwork and cooperation with all departments. Perform other duties as assigned. Physical/Environmental Requirements

Work environment includes constant exposure to animals and animal allergens. Push/pull moderately heavy objects up to 25 pounds. Lift and move objects and animals weighing up to 50 pounds; restrain animals when necessary. Walk dogs weighing up to 150 pounds in various weather conditions. Occasionally kneel, bend, stoop, squat, reach, grasp, and stand/walk repetitively throughout shift. Dexterity to handle animals and small objects; assess medical and behavior changes in animals using various observation methods. Tetanus and rabies inoculations are required or must be waived. Experience, Abilities, And Qualities Required

Prior experience medicating dogs and cats in a veterinary, shelter, or boarding facility is preferred. Knowledge of various breeds and symptoms of common diseases in dogs and cats is preferred. Minimum of six months’ work experience in a professional animal setting. Ability to handle multiple tasks and work well under pressure; effective written and verbal communication. Affection for animals and willingness to accommodate them in the workplace; courteous communication with the public, volunteers, and co-workers at all times. Demonstrate maturity, good judgment, professionalism, and neat personal appearance; able to work with a diverse team and community. Pre-employment background check screening is required. Hours

Part-time up to 24 hours per week. Daily reporting hours and days may vary by department needs. Some weekend work required. Occasional hours may be needed to cover vacation or illness of other staff.
