What this job involves
As an Operating Engineer – Electrical, you will be responsible for performing a wide range of electrical trade functions including installation, maintenance, and repair of equipment for the generation, distribution, and utilization of electric energy. This role requires comprehensive training and experience in electrical systems, typically acquired through formal apprenticeship or equivalent training, and includes responding to emergency electrical issues while maintaining safety standards and regulatory compliance. Your day-to-day tasks will include
Installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment such as generators, transformers, switchboards, and motors Designing and installing conduit systems and other electrical transmission equipment Reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications Diagnosing and troubleshooting electrical system malfunctions using specialized testing instruments Performing load calculations for wiring and equipment installations Conducting preventative maintenance on electrical systems to ensure safety and continuous operation Documenting completed work and maintaining accurate service records Supporting secondary facility maintenance tasks including basic plumbing repairs and HVAC troubleshooting Responding to emergency electrical issues as needed Requirements
Formal electrical apprenticeship completion or equivalent training and experience Knowledge of electrical codes and safety regulations Experience with installation and repair of commercial electrical systems and equipment Proficiency in using electrician's hand tools and specialized measuring/testing instruments Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical specifications Documentation and record-keeping skills Availability to respond to emergency situations when needed Preferred
Journeyman or Master Electrician license Experience in facilities maintenance environment Knowledge of building automation systems Basic skills in complementary trades (plumbing, HVAC, general maintenance) Experience with preventative maintenance programs Familiarity with energy efficiency practices and solutions Seniority level
