Overview
The Defense Quality Engineer (DQE) will support the business in the areas of Material Review Board (MRB), new product development, lean implementation, process capability improvement, daily production support, including in-process and final inspection, process and product auditing, and technical data interpretation/analysis (engineering drawings, specifications, technical publications, purchase orders review, and quality system management). The QE must be knowledgeable of statistical process controls, dimensional inspection metrology, and Quality Management Systems such as ISO 9001:2015, AS9100, IATF, TS16949, etc. The QE primarily interfaces with Customers, Suppliers, Sales/Contracts, Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Operations. Responsibilities
Lead and participate in MRB meetings to evaluate non-conforming materials, components, and products. Identify and document root causes of non-conformances in products or materials. Approve, reject, or recommend rework for materials that don’t meet quality standards. Non-Conformance Management: Coordinate and drive the investigation of SIRs in conjunction with manufacturing and engineering teams. Ensure that proper documentation is in place for all non-conformances, including dispositions, corrective actions, and preventive actions. Root Cause Analysis & Corrective Action: Conduct root cause analysis for quality issues, including failure analysis and the implementation of corrective actions. Work with cross-functional teams to ensure that corrective actions are effectively implemented and tracked to completion. Compliance and Documentation: Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., ISO 9001), regulatory requirements, and customer specifications. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records related to MRB activities, including SIRs, audits, and corrective actions. Collaborate with quality peers, manufacturing, engineering, and procurement teams to resolve quality issues. Provide support and guidance to suppliers regarding quality requirements and resolve any material-related issues. Participate in quality improvement initiatives, such as Lean, Six Sigma, or Kaizen, to enhance overall quality and reduce non-conformances. Recommend improvements to processes, materials, or procedures to minimize the occurrence of defects or quality issues. Collect and analyze data to identify and prioritize opportunities for improvement of product and process quality. Provide quality witness on tear down of customer returned material. Conduct and participate in quality system, process, and product audits. Provide technical leadership to inspection team members. Comply with all company policies/procedures and with all military and contractual requirements. Examination / audit on finished product before customer source inspection/shipment to test conformance to ATP; in-line examination/audit of production line confirming adherence to ATP and testing methodology; review of all documentation/drawings, ATP sign off sheets, visual conformance, finish, etc.; ensure product identification marking or labeling requirements are observed in drawings or associated specifications. The ability to perform in-process and final source inspections including First Article inspections. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by management. Candidate Requirements
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Demonstrated ability to create and implement statistically valid control plans and audit plans. Working knowledge of inspection metrology and proper application of automated measuring equipment. Excellent working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Ability to create and/or review failure analysis reports. Thorough knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Project, and other applicable tools. Approximately 10% travel required. Education & Experience Typically requires a minimum level of knowledge that is acquired through a two-year college degree in an applicable field and three years related experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
