Lactation Consultant - Birth Center | MercyOne Dubuque Status: PRN Location: MercyOne Dubuque Birth Center, NICU, Pediatrics and Maternal Health Clinic Role description: Provides bedside support, facilitates weekly support group for new patients, and bi-weekly coffee group for graduated families. Provides education in the maternal health clinic and meets with patients requesting outpatient visits or weight checks. Responsibilities

Provide bedside lactation support and education for breastfeeding dyads; promote informed infant feeding decisions and provide resources as appropriate. Develop, implement, evaluate, and coordinate comprehensive lactation care for breastfeeding clients and their families across the perinatal continuum, including routine and special lactation circumstances. Utilize cultural, psychosocial, nutritional, and pharmacological considerations in lactation practice; make referrals to other health care providers as needed. Interpret current lactation research to inform clinical practice; apply adult learning principles in educational activities for clients, health care providers, regional referral agencies, and the community. Serve as a client advocate and role model for lactation support; communicate effectively with clients and the health care team to achieve optimal perinatal and breastfeeding outcomes. Collaborate with primary health care providers; facilitate patient education, safety, hygiene, infection control, and informed decision making. Provide leadership within the interdisciplinary team and participate in teaching plans for perinatal staff, with emphasis on breastfeeding education and community outreach. Document interventions, outcomes, and plans of care; develop and maintain documentation records for assessment, history, and follow-up. Develop and review breastfeeding policies and procedures; participate in performance improvement activities to evaluate program effectiveness. Coordinate follow-up with in-patients, post-discharge clients, NICU families, outpatients, and telephone contacts; establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with clients. Deliver education before and after delivery in MercyOne Maternal Prenatal Clinic; maintain effective communication with clients and health care team. Obtain written consent to initiate care and communicate with dyad’s primary health care providers; maintain professional conduct and provide constructive feedback to team members. Advocate for breastfeeding dyads and support non-breastfeeding dyads; ensure mother and infant education is understood and practiced; provide resources and referrals as needed. Develop community resources lists and share with clients and team members; participate in professional development and peer review to improve lactation practice. Stay current through ongoing professional development and research; share findings with relevant disciplines as appropriate. Participate in staff and interdisciplinary meetings; liaise with vendors to ensure availability of supplies and equipment for breastfeeding dyads. Essential Functions

Demonstrate Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behavior and decisions. Apply the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate breastfeeding and early parenting issues. Obtain and interpret health and breastfeeding histories, pregnancy and birth history, lactation history, goals, and mother’s perception of feeding problems and infant behavior. Assess mother-infant interactions, feeding dynamics, infant behavior and growth, medications, and feeding outcomes. Apply lactation and nursing theories to clinical decisions; work with infant and mother primary care providers. Provide ongoing care to support breastfeeding management and early parenting needs; help families achieve breastfeeding goals. Individualize care to meet physical and emotional needs; educate and counsel to improve compliance while addressing safety and infection control. Consult with care team regarding difficulties or high-risk situations; lead as a resource for the interdisciplinary team. Develop and deliver educational opportunities for perinatal families, the team, and the community; ensure instructions are appropriate and understood; require return demonstrations when applicable. Provide written information and maintenance instructions for devices used by mother/infant; facilitate referrals to other providers as needed. Develop orientation and ongoing education programs for perinatal staff and hospital/community personnel; monitor and update patient education materials. Document interventions and outcomes; maintain records of assessment, history, status, and follow-up; develop evidence-based breastfeeding policies updated to current standards. Collaborate with Performance Improvement staff to trend breastfeeding activities and equipment utilization; evaluate program effectiveness. Facilitate follow-through with clients and maintain ongoing relationships; see patients weekly in the MercyOne Maternal Prenatal Clinic for education before and after delivery; communicate effectively with clients and the care team. Obtain written consent to initiate care and coordinate with primary providers; conduct self-professional behavior with all customers; provide constructive feedback to team members. Demonstrate empathy and professional care; advocate for breastfeeding dyads and support non-breastfeeding dyads; maintain therapeutic relationships and promote informed decision making. Promote community resources and ensure peers are engaged in ongoing professional development; participate in process improvement activities to enhance perinatal/maternal/newborn practice. Demonstrate leadership in change initiatives within the department and across the health system; maintain relationships and resolve conflicts constructively. During census fluctuations, assist with unit tasks and education, support discharge instructions, and help with staffing as needed; oversee daily operations of the milk bank depot and milk dispensary. Qualifications

Graduate of an Associate or Baccalaureate degree nursing program; active RN license. Active International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification. CPR, NRP, and Mandatory Reporter certifications current. Minimum two years’ experience in maternal-child health care setting. Strong verbal/written communication, presentation, analytical, organizational, and professional skills. Excellent interpersonal, consultative, and relationship-building skills; ability to collaborate across levels of leadership. Comfort with a collaborative, shared leadership environment; ability to inspire and motivate others to align with Trinity Health values. Ability to manage priorities and adapt to changing workloads; comply with Trinity Health policies and procedures. Physical and Working Conditions
