CT Technologist - PRN
Under general supervision of Medical and Radiation Oncologists, the CT Technologist provides CT and/or Bone Densitometry exams as prescribed by the Medical and Radiation Oncologists and in accordance with established procedures. The CT Technologist is responsible for ensuring proper patient care and treatment, assisting coworkers in addressing patient needs, workflow, and potential problems to maintain smooth operation of Radiology services. The CT Technologist operates CT and ancillary equipment, processes exposed films, critiques images, and maintains equipment as required.
Pay Range $35.00/hr - $36.00/hr
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Participate in CT and/or Bone Densitometry scanning to maintain competency and quality of care during operating hours.
Monitor imaging and review images, ensuring exams are completed in a timely manner.
Assist with the development of radiology policies and procedures to enhance workflow and accuracy of exams.
Serve as contact for Radiation and Medical Oncologists, Radiologists, Radiology staff, and other collaborators.
Perform a variety of CT and Bone Densitometry procedures according to physician orders.
Prepare CT room and equipment in accordance with established procedures.
Transport patients to and from CT area as needed.
Give patients consent forms and obtain required signatures.
Explain all steps in the procedure to the patient and answer any questions concerning procedures.
Administer contrast media as needed, including evaluating patient veins, placing needle for IV contrast, monitoring injection, and checking for infiltrates and reactions.
Position patients under equipment in accordance with established procedures and standards of accuracy.
Assess and monitor the physical and psychological condition of patients throughout procedures and communicate findings to physician.
Document all aspects of exam in medical record and ensure exams are archived and documented appropriately.
Perform ordered examinations of appropriate anatomical regions in accordance with accepted standards of practice and protocols of the individual site reading physician.
Determine appropriate imaging parameters, position the patient, obtain images, and perform data collection, processing, and analysis of images.
Maintain patient care, comfort, and safety during the exam.
Maintain technical competency through continued education.
Under guidance and approval of the Radiologist, administer contrast agents according to site specific protocols.
Practice radiation safety, minimizing exposure to patient, personnel, and public (ALARA principles).
Inspect all equipment, monitor equipment, and perform quality assurance tests; report malfunctions and variances to appropriate contacts.
Maintain inventory of supplies and linen as needed in each technical area assigned.
Comply with all applicable safety and health regulations and center and hospital policies and procedures.
Operate all areas of the CT software.
Coordinate scheduling of CT procedures with Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology to provide smooth and efficient patient flow.
Maintain written operating procedures and radiation protection procedures to comply with regulatory requirements.
Assure CT software and hardware function properly; report any malfunctions to Supervisor and assist in troubleshooting minor problems.
Submit billing accurately and timely for CT procedures through EPIC Radiant system.
Complete required continuing education and training.
Retrieve reports when requested and make appropriate copies of exams when requested.
Provide assistance to Radiation Oncology on an as‑needed basis, including assisting radiation therapists with positioning of patients during CT simulations and providing technical support to Radiation Oncology.
Other Duties Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Qualifications American Registry of Radiologic Technology in Radiologic Technology RT(R) certification or registry eligible is required. American Registry of Radiologic Technology in Radiology and CT certification (ARRT/RT (CT)) or registry eligible (preferred). Current licensure in the State of Illinois for practice in Radiology Certification by or eligibility for the computed tomography certification board is preferred. Current CPR certification or willingness to become certified. Must take EPIC training and successfully pass required tests.
Previous Experience One to three years of CT experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of CT procedures, equipment operation, basic radiation physics and safety, and patient care techniques.
Ability to function in a demanding, fast‑paced work environment and with patients of acute, chronic, and complex disease processes, including those who are dying.
Verbal and written English communication skills for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards.
Organization and interpersonal skills; practice patient confidentiality.
Positive attitude towards health care team members and diverse patient populations.
Physical Requirements Standing, walking, sitting, carrying, pushing, pulling, lifting, climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, twisting, reaching, handling, kneeling, and wrist and digital dexterity. Patient lifting, ambulating, and transfer of patients in wheelchairs, on gurneys and beds. Speaking, hearing, and visual acuity to assess patients and administer treatments; receive and interpret instructions; chart; and operate equipment. Exerting force (frequently up to 10‑20 pounds and occasionally more) to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including supplies, medical charts, x‑rays, treatment aids, etc. Able to support persons (possibly 200 pounds or more) in emergency situations. Able to move quickly from place to place on occasion. Possible driving.
Mental Demands Must be able to work under stress and adapt to changing conditions.
Working Conditions Potential exposure to blood and body fluids, ionizing radiation, chemical disinfectants, radiology chemicals, and metal alloys. Normal patient care environment.
