Overview
Nemours is seeking a Clinical Core Laboratory Supervisor to join our Nemours Children’s Health team in Orlando, Florida. This role is for the evening/night shift and includes leadership of the Core Laboratory with emphasis on hematology and hematopathology. The supervisor provides technical and operational oversight of hematology testing (including manual differentials, body fluid analysis, and support for hematopathology workflows) and manages daily operations across chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, and specimen processing. The position ensures the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and regulatory compliance (CLIA, CAP, and Joint Commission). The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in hematology with the ability to optimize workflows, troubleshoot complex cases, and mentor staff to ensure excellence in testing and interpretation. This leader will drive process improvements, support validation and implementation of new instrumentation, and collaborate with pathologists, the medical director, and enterprise leadership to enhance patient care and operational efficiency. As a contributing member to daily operations, the ideal candidate will also provide bench coverage as a generalist in all areas of the laboratory when needed. Responsibilities
Oversee the Clinical Core Laboratory section or work process; this includes all technical, clinical, and quality aspects of the work area, and supervision, development and oversight of staff in the assigned section, or performing the specific work process. The areas supervised include Chemistry, Hematology and Processing/Phlebotomy. Ensure correct performance of tests in the assigned section, supervise staff, ensure staff training, review daily test performance and reports, initiate corrective action as needed, and communicate results of reviews to the Administrative Director, Medical Director, or other appropriate parties. Ensure that technical procedures are written following established guidelines; review procedures according to relevant regulatory guidelines. Establish and monitor section quality control procedures following regulatory guidelines; initiate corrective action and maintain complete documentation; review QC charts, maintenance logs, reports, proficiency testing, and related records for regulatory inspection. Participate in Quality Assessment and Improvement programs, identify opportunities to improve services, make recommendations, and implement actions aligned with Nemours goals; review problem reports and monitor progress of changes. Participate in recruitment of staff, make hiring and promotion recommendations. Train, evaluate, and counsel section employees; review staff competency and performance; initiate retraining and ensure participation in continuing education relevant to job performance. Schedule section employees to ensure appropriate coverage, avoid overtime where possible, rotate staff to maintain competency, and evaluate time-off requests to maintain staffing levels. Select, implement, and maintain technical equipment; justify capital equipment needs and evaluate cost-benefit of alternatives; make recommendations to laboratory administration. Maintain knowledge of section technical and regulatory requirements; ensure readiness for inspections; address compliance issues and participate in inspections, correcting deficiencies as needed. Maintain section supply inventory at appropriate levels and address supply-related problems. Follow and enforce safety procedures; train staff on safety and address safety concerns with laboratory administration. Confers with physicians and others regarding tests, results, and test selection as appropriate. Evaluate test results for section compliance with laboratory and hospital regulations (timeliness, critical value reporting, confidentiality, etc.). Evaluate referred tests and provide recommendations about testing vendors and in-housing decisions, including scheduling, cost-benefit analysis, and equipment recommendations. Review staffing and equipment needs and make recommendations for budget preparation; justify requests for staff and equipment and adjust staffing plans as needed. Maintain section records such as QC, maintenance, patient reports, QA/I and other documentation; ensure quick retrieval and staff adherence to documentation procedures. Job Requirements
Bachelor's Degree required. Minimum of 5+ years experience required. State of Florida Laboratory Supervisor License required. Nationally recognized certification as a Medical Technologist or equivalent (ASCP or AMT) required. About Us
