This position is for an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner to work in our Cardiac ICU at our flagship location in downtown Baltimore. This position will work a rotating schedule. Principal Responsibilities
In collaboration with the attending physician, provide day-to-day organizational and clinical direction and leadership of the healthcare provider team. Perform comprehensive history and physical assessment for patients admitted or scheduled to the service. Order, obtain and interpret diagnostic tests; establish medical diagnoses based on history, assessment, and diagnostic findings. Design, order and document appropriate treatment plans, including prescriptions, based on a comprehensive review of HPI and diagnostic results. Initiate protocols/clinical pathways and evaluate the plan of care to ensure timely intervention. Perform invasive procedures as appropriate to the scope of practice. Collaborate with attendings and residents regarding admission, discharge and transfer decisions. Present patients in the nurse practitioner’s caseload on rounds and communicate plan of care with the patient, family, and appropriate providers. Counsel and educate patients and families on disease processes, treatment plans, and medication regimens; provide health maintenance and preventive care services. Initiate referrals and specialty consultations as needed; facilitate patient flow and timely discharge with the multidisciplinary team including case management. Provide specialty consultation and advocate for patients to ensure understanding of treatment options and patient rights. Consider holistic needs and orchestrate resources (e.g., Pain service, palliative care). Perform other activities as delineated in individual nurse practitioner written agreements. Education Responsibilities
Provide formal and informal educational programs for the health care team aligned with evidence-based practice standards. Mentor and precept students; promote understanding of disease processes in the area of specialty/program. Function as a clinical resource for team members and act as a community health resource for specialty disease entities. Engage in community education, health promotion and outreach. Clinical Leadership/Outcomes
Coordinate nurse practitioner coverage on the service and collaborate with physician leadership to meet metrics (clinical outcomes, LOS, cost of care, patient satisfaction). Participate in performance improvement activities to improve clinical outcomes and minimize variation; develop clinical pathways in collaboration with leadership. Lead quality assurance activities and contribute to standard of practice; apply research and evidence-based practices to patient care delivery. Contribute to hospital policy development and evaluate new care delivery systems to meet patient needs. Participate in department and organizational meetings and initiatives; maintain compliance and regulatory documentation for administrative purposes and reimbursement. Participate in accreditation readiness and supervise ancillary staff, including completing annual reviews. Customer Service
Model and uphold a customer service focus to all internal and external customers; demonstrate respect for all people; maintain patient confidentiality. Professional Development and Organizational Leadership
Serve on department, hospital and community committees; maintain licensure, certification, and collaborative agreement as required. Participate in department educational opportunities and local, regional, and national professional organizations; pursue opportunities for professional growth. Promote the organization to all customers and act as a loyal, informed spokesperson for the hospital. Research Responsibilities
Serve as a clinical trial sub-investigator coordinating industry-sponsored research; doctorally prepared NPs may conduct nursing research as principle investigator. Qualifications
Master of Science Degree with completion of an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program. Registered and currently licensed with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Nurses and certified as a Nurse Practitioner in Maryland. DEA and CDS eligible. CPR required; ACLS/BCLS as required for inpatient work. Minimum of one year experience as a Registered Nurse. Demonstrated professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing, or certification in area of specialty. Ability to provide care appropriate to the patient populations served; knowledge of growth and development principles across the lifespan. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal abilities. Maintains updated hospital safety training and immunizations as recommended. Working Conditions
Weekend, shift work, holiday, on-call and overtime may be required. Potential exposure to infectious diseases; universal precautions required. Patient Safety
Take action to correct observed risks to patient safety; report adverse events and near misses; implement policies and standards consistently.
