Job Summary
Competent Clinician. Possesses knowledge and skill to meet standards for competent professional nursing practice as specified in the Texas Nurse Practice Act. Experienced, knowledgeable and skilled in specialty area. Competently functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team. Practice is characterized by predominantly interdependent decision-making. Practice is problem focused and patient centered in the manner care is provided. Able to manage unexpected or emergency situations that are commonly seen in assigned specialty population. Serves as a resource for Nurse Clinician I or II. Can manage commonly seen contingency situations that arise on the clinical unit. Provides patient care through nursing practices based upon the American Nurses Association Standards of Professional Practice, and Professional Performance. Values specialty unit, nursing, and institutional strategic initiatives and health system goals.
Essential Job Functions
Professional Practice: Nursing Process – assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document the daily care of assigned patients; identify nursing diagnoses/patient care needs; develop and revise care plans; execute physician orders; administer medications and treatments; provide culturally congruent and specialty-appropriate competent nursing care per UTMB policies.
Patient/Family Teaching & Health Promotion – provide basic patient/family instruction and healthcare teaching based on learning needs; utilize evidence-based resources; use Teach-Back to confirm understanding.
Care Coordination & Delegation – plan, coordinate, and prioritize patient care activities; maintain safety and continuity of care; demonstrate time management; delegate appropriately and seek guidance when needed; use technology effectively in patient care.
Professional Performance: Ethics (legal/regulatory), Advocacy & Culturally Congruent Care – identify ethical situations and seek assistance as needed; deliver culturally sensitive care; serve as patient advocate.
Communication & Collaboration – maintain respectful communication; recognize colleagues who demonstrate UTMB’s core values; collaborate with inter-professional team.
Leadership – recognize unit/hospital leaders; understand unit, nursing, and institutional strategic initiatives; consider financial responsibility to promote fiscal health.
Education, Evidence-Based Practice & Research – participate in unit meetings and quality improvement activities; engage in shared leadership; attend in-services; participate in journal clubs and evidence-based practice projects; pursue lifelong learning and utilize evidence-based resources.
Quality, Resources & Safety – identify patient safety concerns; engage in unit quality metrics and improvement activities; promote personal well-being and safety.
General Requirements – complete required competency tools by evaluation due date; participate in ongoing competency self-evaluation; perform POCT; maintain a clean and safe environment; adhere to infection control; document accurately; use electronic documentation; meet compliance requirements for health screening, training, safety, and CPR.
Salary
Salary commensurate with experience.
